Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe took 2021 by storm with four feature films and five Disney+ TV shows exploring almost every corner of the MCU multiverse, but the biggest unsolved mystery now is why Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackon) is in space; a question that Spider-Man: Far From Home. The barefoot former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. seemed uncharacteristically calm when he called out "Who's got my shoes?"

Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and his wife Soren (Sharon Blynn) were impersonating Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) for the duration of the events in Spider-Man: Far From Home. This immediately led many fans to speculate which Avengers could be Skrulls. Apparently, these two imposters were instructed by the real Nick Fury to give the EDITH glasses to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) per Tony Stark's wishes. Talos asks how Fury's "mission" is going, and this is the first clue about what the one-eyed spy is up to.

Marvel has already announced their Secret Invasion TV series will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022, and Nick Fury will likely be front and center dealing with Skrull imposters of Avengers. In the comics, Fury sets up S.W.O.R.D. to deal with threats from space, but S.W.O.R.D. already exists in the MCU. This version - founded by Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) - can be seen in Westview in S.W.O.R.D. as a replacement for SHIELD in the MCU, but that remains to be seen. This could be a case in which the MCU diverges from the comic origins of the organization.

In the Marvel comics, S.W.O.R.D. stands for "Sentient World Observation and Response Department," but in the MCU it stands for "Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division." This name change allowed the organization to fit the storyline of WandaVision more effectively because of their focus on Vision & Wanda as "sentient weapons." This begs the question of whether all superheroes in the MCU might be considered potential threats too. In another significant change, the MCU Skrulls are made protagonists in their stories, making this version of Skrulls better than in the comics. With all of these changes from the comics, there is no way of knowing exactly how future MCU events will play out.

Fury's absence in point of for Captain Marvel, so it would make perfect sense for him to be involved in these  Marvel Cinematic Universe stories too.
