New York City vigilantes Echo have had a complicated history as enemies turned allies and even former romantic partners, but the pair have never starred in their own comic book title... until now. This spring will see the debut of Daredevil & Echo, a four-part miniseries from legendary Black Eyed Peas musician Jaime Luis Gomez, aka Taboo, B. Earl and Phil Noto
With the popularity of both Daredevil and Echo at an all-time high following the former's appearance on Disney+'s She-Hulk and the latter's introduction in Hawkeye, it stands to reason that the House of Ideas would want to move ahead on a comic title. While several plot details concerning the series remain under wraps, May's Daredevil & Echo will reportedly find the titular heroes reuniting once again to face off against classic Spider-Man baddie Demogoblin and his attempts to awaken an ancient evil. What this particular evil is has yet to be revealed, but Daredevil has no shortage of supernatural-based foes, which can even align with the clan of ninja assassins known as the Hand, who Echo took on under the guise of Ronin.
Daredevil & Echo Officially Share the Spotlight
Daredevil has remained a fixture of Marvel Comics dating back to the Silver Age of Marvel Comics, in which the blind lawyer by day, vigilante by night was created by Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett. Maya Lopez, aka Echo, is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Universe within the stable of classic heroes and villains. Echo originally began her comic book career as a vengeful assassin hired and manipulated by Daredevil's nemesis Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. After managing to avoid screen time with Marvel's Avengers characters for years, both Daredevil and Echo "officially" entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2021 during the franchise's fourth phase of films and television content, with each getting new self-titled TV series in the coming years.
Prior to his duties on Daredevil & Echo, Taboo previously lent his writing abilities to another new MCU superstar in Werewolf by Night. Taboo and artist Benjamin Jackendoff's Werewolf by Night miniseries from late 2020 did away with the horror title's original host Jack Russell and introduced yet another protagonist in Jake Gomez. Taboo has also worked on Ghost Rider: Kushala and Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
While Echo has appeared in Daredevil comics before - and he even recommended her for Avengers hip as a new version of Ronin - it's awesome to finally see her get top-billing, as her breakout success continues. Once enemies, now the closest of allies, Daredevil and Echo are a unique Marvel partnership sure to explore some epic adventures as an official duo.
Marvel's Daredevil & Echo #1 will be available at select comic retailers on May 24.
