Ben Brode, the former director of Blizzard’s Hearthstone, has the increasingly controversial Blizzard.
Brode left Blizzard in April of 2018 with the intention of starting his own game development company. Together with other ex-Blizzard employees, Brode would reveal the studio, called Second Dinner, later that year. Although the company did not mention much about its first project, Second Dinner would announce in 2019 that the studio was given a $30 million investment to develop a Marvel-themed mobile game. Second Dinner would remain silent for the next couple of years, presumably working on the game until the time was right.
Roughly four years after the company’s inception, Second Dinner has finally announced its first big game coming to mobile devices. Like Hearthstone, players will collect cards and build decks to battle other players online. Snap will utilize a new “Snapping” feature that encourages players to raise the stakes in ranked play, giving the game a high-tension aura with every match. Although the game sounds a bit like a generic CCG on the outside, Ben Brode promised Marvel Snap will be something totally different.
Marvel Snap was designed to be played at a much faster pace than other CCGs on the market now, as the turn-based system has been removed entirely to keep games shorter and more action-packed. Brode also noted that the number of cards in a player’s deck has been significantly reduced in order to make deck-building much simpler, while still encouraging strategic thinking. Marvel Snap is planned to launch with over 150 cards, all with unique stats and striking art. After launch, Second Dinner plans to update the game regularly by adding new cards, locations, cosmetics, season es, ranked seasons, challenges, missions, and events. Although the game will integrate microtransactions, senior director of production Julia Humphreys assured players that every card can be obtained without spending any money.
Marvel Snap’s first closed beta will be available on Android devices (with s starting today). Despite being developed as a “mobile-first game,” Humphreys mentioned that an early-access version of Marvel Snap will also be released for PC sometime in the future, likely around Marvel Snap's official mobile release. Card game fans will have to wait and see what the future has in store for this new title.
