follow-up to the original Leverage, the Prime Video series is currently halfway through season 3, and there has been no word about a potential season 4. It is the show's first time being hosted by Prime Video, as seasons 1 and 2 were presented by Freevee. With a new streaming service involved, the renewal remains an open question for both viewers and the showrunner himself.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns about his show, The Librarians: The Next Chapter, Devlin explained the major delay to Leverage: Redemption's renewal. Just as audiences have not heard any news, the cast and crew are still waiting, as Prime Video continues to gather "a lot of data." Devlin believes that they are planning to gather six months of data after the season finale, and he believes that their renewal practice is the reason that many shows have a two-year delay between seasons. Check out his comments below:
We haven't heard yet. Amazon likes to get a lot of data, they usually wait until after the last show is aired, and then they want about six more months of data afterwards. I think on one hand, it's great that they don't have to rush, but on the other hand, it's tough, because sometimes, you go two years in between seasons. So, we're hoping we'd get word one way or another sooner than later, but I anticipate it'll be a while.
What This Means For Leverage: Redemption Season 4
It Will Be A Long Wait, If It Happens
There is no guarantee that Redemption will earn a renewal, as there are several factors working against it. The show suffered a two-year delay between seasons 2 and 3, partly driven by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that likely hampered production in 2023. A significant delay always risks losing momentum, as there is a chance that audiences will not return to a semi-forgotten series. The transition from Freevee to Prime Video also risked losing viewers, given that they may have had added difficulties finding the show.
With this strategy, every subsequent season risks losing more attention from viewers.
If the show did stumble during the transition, a renewal would be challenging with Prime Video's data-oriented focus. The added delay also means that it will be challenging for the show to ever achieve an annual release, even if Leverage: Redemption is renewed for season 4. With this strategy, every subsequent season risks losing more attention from viewers, especially if they get tired of the constant delays.
Our Take On Leverage: Redemption's Delayed Renewal
It May Be A Serious Mistake
Prime Video is, rightfully, looking to ensure that it will not be making a mistake by renewing this show. This is an understandable concern, especially given the delay between seasons. Yet, while the streaming giant may not want to make a mistake, it is also risking losing the potential for shows to grow over time. With exposure to a wider audience, future seasons could gain momentum. Streaming platforms want shows to have giant debuts from early on, and Leverage: Redemption can still receive that, but they are risking losing smaller-scale shows that attract loyal audiences.
