Warning! Contains spoilers for Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 83!The powerful new villains introduced in Kaiju No. 8's latest arc have already been completely outclassed by its hero, which doesn't bode well for the story. The manga by Naoya Matsumoto depicts the continual battle between the Kaijus ravaging Japan and the humans of the Japanese Defense Force striving to protect the country. Its main hero, Kafka, has been kept out of the spotlight for a while, but his return in the latest chapter is a worrying sign for the stakes of the story.

Chapter 83, translated by Medibang Inc, picks up right where the previous chapter ended with Kafka having saved a soldier from one of the new super-powerful Kaijus that Kaiju No. 9 created to defeat the most powerful of the Defense Force. Kafka must transform into his Kaiju form to do this, which alerts all the engineered Daikaiju to his presence. The one fighting Kikoru notes that all the special Kaiju were supposed to team up to defeat Kafka when he appeared, but the one closest to him ignores this advice instead charging in for an immediate attack. Despite powering up to absurd levels before attacking, the Kaiju's attack barely affects Kafka, and he retaliates with a punch that instantly destroys it.

Kafka Trivializes Kaiju No. 8's New Villains

This disparity in power may look cool, but it ultimately decreases the stakes of the story. These special Daikaiju have been built up to be intimidating threats since their introductions, promising to challenge the Defense Force on both a personal and physical level. Kafka staved off that cost in Kaiju No.'s last chapter, it seems like he can easily interfere with his teammates' fights as well.

Kafka has already marked the locations of the Kaiju fighting Hoshina and Narumi, who may be having intense and personal fights. But, Kafka's presence has lowered the stakes of those fights automatically. With Kafka seemingly being able to finish off all these Kaiju in a single blow, he can likely just pick them off one by one as they are occupied in much more interesting fights with of the Defense Force. After all, Kafka may have promised to stay out of Kikoru's fight, but it's unlikely he made this promise with all the other Defense Force too.

Kaiju No. 8 Makes Kafka's Allies Useless

Of course, Kaiju No. 9 will hopefully be able to give Kafka a challenge, but if he does, that will likely mean the other Defense Force who are struggling against enemies Kafka can easily defeat won't be able to do much to help. Other series like My Hero Academia have been able to deal with this dynamic pretty well, but Kaiju No. 8 seems to be mishandling it from the beginning. Hopefully the series is able to balance the shocking power level of its protagonist with the rest of the characters in this arc or else Kaiju No. 8 may turn what seems to be its final arc into its worst as well.
