Hot New Crunchyroll Anime is Actually Naruto's True Successor in One BIG Way
Kaiju No. 8 exploded onto the Crunchyroll library in Spring 2024, sharing a surprising common element with a modern anime classic, Naruto.
What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #2
In Kaiju No. 8 episode #2, “The Kaiju Who Defeats Kaiju”, a Kaiju started attacking the city as Kafka and Reno were going into hiding, and Kafka, unable to ignore the Kaiju, went after it and protected a child in the process. The fight with the Kaiju and the praise he received further reignited Kafka’s desire to the Defense Force, even if he still lacked control over his newfound abilities, and after Mina and her team learn about everything that happened, Kafka’s Kaiju form is given the special designation of Kaiju No. 8.
Three months later, Kafka and Reno moved into the second stage of the Defense Force entrance exam, although Kafka still didn’t have full control of his abilities. At the exam site, Kafka ran afoul of Kikoru Shinomiya, a haughty young girl who repeatedly insulted Kafka and even used a special suit to punch his car. Kikoru’s actions only served to aggravate Kafka, but more unsettling was how Kikoru told Kafka that he smelled like a Kaiju.

Two of 2024's Biggest Anime Are the Dark Saturday Morning Cartoons Every 90s Kid Dreamed of
There's plenty of buzzworthy anime in Spring 2024, but two bring the Saturday morning energy every weekend in a big way for the 90s kids.
Kaiju No. 8 Is Already Playing Into A Classic Superhero Convention
With Kaiju No. 8 episode #2’s release, the series is playing into a classic convention of superhero stories: the dichotomy between the hero’s identities. As is common in superhero stories, Kafka is just a normal person as a civilian whereas his superhero persona, Kaiju No. 8, is viewed as a public menace, and like other stories, the differing ways people view Kafka are sure to do a lot to flesh out his character and the overall narrative. It’s an interesting angle for a story like this to tackle, and with any luck, Kaiju No. 8 has something great in store.
Be sure to watch Kaiju No. 8 episode #3 when it releases on Saturday, April 27.
