After Justice League suffered from poor removal of Henry Cavill's Superman mustache, the Snyder Cut fixes that. To say that the released cut of Justice League had problems would be a massive understatement. Of course, the reasons for that are now well-known. Despite still being credited, much of what director Zack Snyder had shot was discarded, and Whedon presided over lots of reshoots. So different was Whedon's version from Snyder's original vision that the "Release the Snyder Cut!" fan movement was born.
One of the biggest blunders to be found in the Whedon cut of Justice League, and one of the most noticeable, involved really sloppy CGI removal of Henry Cavill's mustache. While Superman obviously doesn't have a mustache, Cavill's contract with another studio prevented him from shaving off the facial hair. This led to strange-looking scenes in which Superman's upper lip looked noticeably edited, creating an almost creepily fake effect. The poor quality of the mustache's excision from Justice League quickly became a laughing stock among fans.
Thankfully, as can be seen in all footage of Zack Snyder's Justice League released so far, the Snyder Cut comes with no such issues concerning Superman's personal grooming. Why was the Snyder Cut able to manage this feat, while Whedon struggled with removing Cavill's mustache? The answer is simple: it literally wasn't a problem.
Justice League: How the Snyder Cut Fixed Superman's Mustache
The reason that Henry Cavill's Superman is both sans-mustache and without terrible CGI on his upper lip in the Snyder Cut of Justice League is that all of his material in the new edit was shot back during Snyder's original time directing the production. The only reason Cavill even had a mustache to worry about during the Whedon Cut is that Warner Bros. opted to have months of reshoots directed by Whedon take place after Cavill had already begun filming his villain role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Cavill's contract with Paramount meant he couldn't shave the thick, distinctive mustache worn by his character, and the studio held firm.
With Zack Snyder having excised every bit of Whedon-shot footage from his version of Justice League, Cavill's un-Kryptonian mustache is no longer an issue at all. It'll be just one of many hopeful improvements to the widely panned theatrical cut that Zack Snyder's Justice League makes in its final product. While it sadly looks like Snyder's true long-term plans for the DCEU will never fully be realized, at least fans will now get the film they should've gotten four years ago, now with 100 percent less CGI mustache removal.
