Warning: Contains Spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga
Summary
- Sukuna and Yorozu's battle resembles a rom-com scene with a pursuer and pursued dynamic.
- Integration of a love interest is a unique twist on typical battles usually seen in Jujutsu Kaisen.
- Gege Akutami's innovative storytelling pushes the boundaries of what's possible in a Shonen battle manga.
Just because Sukuna is the most hated cursed spirit in Jujutsu Kaisen, doesn't mean he's unlovable, and Yorozu's actions prove he not only can be loved but also can add a dash of romance to one of the most prolific battle mangas currently in publication.
In Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 217, the King of the Curses Sukuna, who is now in control of Megumi Fushiguro, faces off against Yorozu, another ancient sorcerer who was occupying the body of Megumi's older sister, Tsumiki.
As with other Jujutsu Kaisen fights, there's plenty of commentary between opponents both before and during the battle. But what makes the commentary in this fight particularly interesting is rather than the typical taunts and challenges, Sukuna and Yorozu's conversation is similar to love interests in a romantic comedy manga, like Don't Mess With Me Miss Nagatoro.
Yorozu's Twisted Love For Sukuna Turns Jujutsu Kaisen into a Rom-Com
Despite the Unfortuante Relationship Between the Bodies They Inhabitted
In a further example of the chapter's romantic turn, the ensuing battle between Sukuna and Yorozu is the perfect recreation of a typical rom-com manga scene, except with action. On the one side there is Sukuna - the pursued doing everything he can via cursed technique to deny Yorozu advances. In the other corner, there's Yorozu - the pursuer doing everything she can to make Sukuna fall for her. As in a typical rom-com, the pursuer is often desperate for affection, and with Yorozu, she's been waiting a thousand years for the chance.

"No One Has The Ultimate Truth" - Jujutsu Kaisen's Creator Confirmed the Series' True Meaning
Gege Akutami, creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, has an interesting philosophy on what defines good, evil, and ultimate truth in the series.
The brief focus on romance is another sign of Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami pushing the boundaries of classic Shonen battle manga
The actual expression of a love interest in Jujutsu Kaisen, as opposed to the possible romance between Nobara and Yuji or the impossible partnership between Yuta and Rika is a unique twist to the series. Though the battle would eventually end in tragedy as Sukuna successfully beats (and kills) Yorozu, the brief focus on romance is another sign of Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami pushing the boundaries of classic Shonen battle manga.
Jujutsu Kaisen's Battles Have Always Pushed the Boundaries of Shonen
So it's No Surprise the Series Would Briefly Try Out Romance
Gege has always been quite innovative in his storytelling. In addition to the occasional use of humorous scenes and characters, he often adds references to art, poetry, and literature, into the Jujutsu Kaisen backdrop. Jujutsu Kaisen is also not averse to poking fun at other manga or the industry itself. This makes the choice to add a rom-com element to the Sukuna - Yorozu battle understandable. Every battle in Jujutsu Kaisen brings something new to the table, which is why it's no surprise that Sukuna and Yorozu's rom-com battle was so thrilling.
