The James Gunn's Superman movie in July 2025 or Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow a year later, the DCU is finally here. Succeeding from the DCEU, audiences have become convinced that the past might meet the future after a debate was caused over a reunion between James Gunn and Zack Snyder.

James Gunn initially raised these conversations on socials, with the new DC Studios chief posting an image of himself and his longtime friend and collaborator, Zack Snyder. Gunn praised Snyder's filmmaking as well as his storytelling, blending the future of the DCU with the past of the DCEU in a way that is sure to excite DC fans.

Naturally, debate and reaction ensued among the wider DC fandom online. From some taking it as a sign that Snyder will be working alongside Gunn on an DCU project to others simply highlighting their filmmaking past on projects like Dawn of the Dead, the image suitably caught attention as evidenced by the reactions below:

@bonniegrrl shared enthusiasm at the concept of Gunn and Snyder collaborating on a future DCU concept. Given both filmmakers' past, present, and future ties to the world of DC Comics, this is certainly a common desire among audiences.

@EverythingDCU_ backs this desire up by potentially providing evidence that a Snyder-Gunn collaboration is inbound. The popular DC showcased the similarities in setting between Gunn and Snyder's reunion and an image the former shared of the DCU's creative room.

@ReevesBatverse notes the way DC fans have been divided over Gunn and Snyder's separate visions of late, indicating the intense discourse that would surround a collaboration. Noting projects like The Authority and Clayface, it seems Snyder's pick of potential DCU projects would suit his distinct visual and narrative style.

@ResonantJustice echoes the potential project Snyder could work on should a collaboration with Gunn happen in the DCU. The Authority, evidently, is a popular choice given the source material's morally ambiguous similarities with Snyder's previous work, from Watchmen to his own take on the DCEU.

Finally, @JPipo86 bluntly cuts straight to the chase. Rather than outline certain projects Snyder could work on or theorize about the filmmaker's involvement in the DCU, this post typifies the aforementioned desire that many have to see Gunn and Snyder work together on a DC project, regardless of what it is.

What The James Gunn & Zack Snyder Reunion Photo Means For The DCU

Could A Collaboration Actually Happen?

Regarding what the James Gunn and Zack Snyder photo means for the DCU's future, it is certainly wide-reaching. Of course, one possibility is that the photo means nothing regarding the varied movies and shows of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. As is often pointed out by neutral factions among the warring tribes of Snyder's DCEU fans and Gunn's DCU dreamers, the two filmmakers have long been friends. Be it from their past collaborations or simply their conversations about the future of DC that were confirmed to have been held, Snyder and Gunn’s photo could simply signify their friendship.

However, from a much more fun and conjecture-based point of view, the photo could have big implications. As pointed out by the many reactions above, collaboration is certainly possible given the duo's history, Gunn's willingness to allow distinct directorial voices to work on the DCU, and Snyder's aptitude for several teased projects in the franchise. Whether this is confirmed or not remains to be seen, but the photo shared by Gunn could well mean Snyder's days at DC are not as numbered as first thought.

Our Take On The James Gunn & Zack Snyder Reunion Photo

The Two Sides Of DC Do Not Need To Be Sides At All

Above all else, I appreciate Gunn's image with Snyder as it simply proves that the discourse surrounding which direction DC should take is fruitless. Of course, fans will always wish for their favorite filmmakers to succeed, especially in a franchise as compelling as DC. Snyder did not, unfortunately, get that chance which has sparked outrage in Gunn's direction. Thankfully, the filmmakers are proving that this has not driven a wedge between them.

As someone who liked Snyder's take on the DCEU and is also excited about Gunn's planned DCU future, I would love to see a collaboration between the two as a means of bridging the proverbial gap between the two sides of DC. The filmmakers are on good , and what better would there be to mend the rift in the fanbase by Gunn giving Snyder a story that would be perfect for his unique talents? Overall, I hope this outcome happens as much as anyone, but I am equally content if this image is simply a way of Gunn and Snyder sharing their friendship.
