Hiccup's journey concluded in 2019 with The Hidden World, but fans of him, Astrid, and the other villagers of Berk have kept themselves attached to the franchise thanks to the astonishing quantity of memes lurking around. Rooted by the story's down-to-earth approach to the fantasy genre, they maintain their love and have been bringing new audiences from different generations into its magical storytelling and humor.
An Epic Soundtrack
ââââââ
Every epic story needs an epic soundtrack and How To Train Your Dragon's surely falls into the legendary spectrum.
John Powell has worked as a composer for more than eighty movie features, including Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the 2010 movie, each track is a masterpiece in of its precision. The gradually increasing rhythm in the background weaves its way through the plot, becoming a part of it. This meme shows the connection between the feeling of freedom that derives from the epic vibes of the music in HTTYD.
It Must Exist, Right?
Located on the island of the same name, Berk is the village where the protagonist Hiccup lives with his father, the local chief, and his friends.
How To Train Your Dragon is the perfect movie for those who love Vikings to watch, as its setting is inspired by the Northern culture. The village is so well-built and developed, that many fans believe it to be inspired by a real-life location and were surprised when they did not show up in their research.
Maybe it also helps that it is described in the movies as being "fourteen days North of Hopeless," which is an actual group of Norwegian islands currently known as Thousand Isles, near Tusenøyane. Funnily enough, the word Berk is commonly used as "fool" in English slang.
The Night Fury Species In A Nutshell
Night Furies are a rare dragon species thought to be pretty much extinct until Hiccup found Toothless.
Initially, they were thought to be savage and dangerous creatures as depicted by the Viking lore, but, as this meme illustrates, not everything is what it seems. Toothless's relationship with Hiccup has since debunked these myths. In fact, and judging solely by the King of the Hidden World's sweet manner, Night Furies are anything but the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself."
"Just Friends"
Hiccup has known Astrid Hofferson since they were children, and has had a crush on her from a young age. Saying that their relationship status is complicated is an understatement.
They have gone through their share of adventures together and ed each other through it all. Despite Astrid's hits toward him, Hiccup's shyness prevents him from revealing his feelings for her during a good part of the story. They are the true embodiment of the will-they-won't-they trope, with both denying that anything more than platonic friendship exists between them.
Comparing Toothless
Nine years separate the franchise's first installment and its last and this shows in the character's different developments.
In The Hidden World, a ruthless dragon hunter named Grimmel uses a female Night Fury-like dragon as bait to capture Toothless. And Hiccup's innocent friend is totally caught by the trap, even falls in love with the recent appearance. Memes like this populate Reddit and serve as both a mocking critique of Toothless's evolution and a reminder of how his relationship with Hiccup has changed throughout the years
Like Father Like Son
A fundamental piece of the story is related to the villagers’ fear of dragons, who have been described as vicious creatures to them for generations.
Stoick has believed his wife was kidnapped and killed by a rogue dragon since Hiccup was a small kid. As the chief village, it is his duty to protect Berk and his residents, so he enforces a no-dragon-allowed policy. Once Hiccup and Toothless prove to him that there is nothing to be afraid of, he asks his son for forgiveness, an attitude that is later mirrored by Hiccup after he realizes that blaming his dragon for the destruction of Berk was wrong of him. It is one of How To Train Your Dragon 3’s most awesome moments.
The Twins' Antics
Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston are Hiccups rambunctious friends, and just so happen to be twins.
Their eccentric demeanor goes together with their unpredictability, and both have caused a lot of trouble in Berk. Despite their innate ability to understand each other’s non-verbalized ideas, they spend a big portion of their time in the movies arguing among themselves, which makes them perfect for moments of comic relief, one of the things that instantly make a movie good.
The Power Of Friendship
Hiccup has a tight-knit group of friends who him on his adventures throughout the How To Train You Dragon franchise. Astrid Hofferson, Fishlegs Ingerman, Snotlout Jorgenson, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut are all there when he needs them.
They also protect Berk and have become dragon-riders alongside him. As so, it is not surprising that when Hiccup suggests trying to find the mystical land where dragons hid, Tuffnut shows little concern with the dangers of such a journey and wants to help him.
When Toothless Was Enamored
In The Hidden World, the scene where Toothless first encounters the Light Fury is a classic instance of life.
Hiccup’s dragon has never developed feelings for another of his kind before, and he is very shy about approaching the lady. But he must not worry, Hiccup is nearby to help out with weird gestures that obviously do not have the desired effect. It is a hilarious moment that encapsulates the stereotypical misadventures of friendship.
Those Hidden Feelings Are Back
The ending of How To Train You Dragon 3 is highly emotional, to say the least.
Realizing that it is not safe for the dragons to remain in Berk, Hiccup and his counterparts release them and send them into hiding. This meme contains a picture of that moment, with Toothless looking back at Hiccup one last time, and flying away.
