Idris Elba must stop a terrorist-related midair crisis in first look images from the new Apple TV+ thriller show Hijack. As detective John Luther in Luther, Elba spent five seasons on the BBC solving the most horrifying of crimes, garnering four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie along the way. This year, Elba’s complex crime fighter broke out of prison to hunt down one more serial killer in the hit Netflix movie Luther: Fallen Sun.

Now Luther's Elba is set to return as another man on a mission, playing a corporate negotiator tasked with stopping a terrorist-related crisis in Hijack, which just dropped some first look images (via Collider).

The Apple TV+ show is billed as a real-time thriller in the vein of 24, a format that promises to amp up the excitement, with Elba lending his authoritative presence at the show’s center. The newly released images tease Elba along with a few of his co-stars, including Archie Panjabi of Blindspot, Snowpiercer and Star Wars: The Bad Batch fame.

Everything We Know About Hijack

Created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith, who previously teamed up for Netflix’s anthology-style procedural Criminal, Hijack is set to run for seven episodes. The show’s synopsis reads as follows:

Told in real time, “Hijack” is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. Elba will star as ‘Sam Nelson,’ an accomplished negotiator in the business world who needs to step up and use all his guile to try and save the lives of the engers — but, his high-risk strategy could be his undoing.

Starring alongside Elba and Panjabi in Hijack are Max Beesley (Homeland), Holly Aird (Waking the Dead), Christine Adams (TRON: Legacy), Aimée Kelly (Sket), Eve Myles (Torchwood), Neil Maskell (Bull), Jasper Britton (The New World), Harry Michell (Yesterday), Mohamed Elsandel and Ben Miles (Andor).

While Hijack co-creators Kay and Smith certainly have a track-record of their own coming off Criminal, the new Apple TV+ show’s draw is of course Elba, who brings incredible amounts of gravitas to every role he plays. Hijack sounds like it will give the Luther star a chance to flex his dramatic muscles in a high-tension situation, bringing viewers on a thrill ride that may or may not remind them of the exploits of Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer in the classic FOX series 24. Hijack unleashes its own brand of real-time thrills when it flies onto Apple TV+ on June 28, 2023.
