Helldivers 2 Review: "A Refreshingly Fun Power Fantasy"
Helldivers 2 is just about the best-case scenario for a live-service game, and its show-stopping gameplay delivers incredibly visceral moments.
Helldivers 2 Level Cap Is Now 150
New Titles Unlocked Every 5 Or 10 Levels
Originally, the maximum level that could be reached was 50. However, a post-launch update increased the Helldivers 2 level cap to 150, and simultaneously introduced a number of new titles earnable by achieving higher ranks. Also, unlike other games with battle systems, a player's level does not impact what someone can purchase. There is a special rank in Super Citizen, but that can only be acquired by purchasing the Super Citizen Edition of Helldivers 2. Every title that can be unlocked in Helldivers 2, and at what level, is as follows:

It may look a bit off that the progression path goes from General to Private, but there is a suspected reason for this. It plays into the military parody that Helldivers 2 has become known for. This shows how a player has gone through all that effort and brutal battlefields just to end up at the low end of the system. Whether this idea will continue if the level cap is raised again is unknown, but it may be fitting to leave it as is.
Why Helldivers 2 Has This Many Ranks
Preparation Versus Leisurely Grind
Given that Helldivers 2 provides its gear at a low level (and capable loadouts can be created regardless of level), it can feel weird with the level cap going all the way to 150. While no reason was given for this, it can be theorized it was to give Helldivers more progression to chase. As simple as it may seem, giving players something to progress through can be appealing, even if titles are superfluous. This can be for competitive reasons or to show off how much dedication and time has been put into the game.
The other option could be for future high-tier Stratagems that Arrowhead Game Studios wants players to work for. Given how much access the developers want Helldivers to have, it is unlikely that newly introduced Stratagems would require attaining the highest ranks. However, some powerful future additions like Exosuits or land vehicles could be placed at a higher level to warrant the strength they have. This strategy will need to be finely tuned so as not to throw off the excellent balance set so far.
Overall, while these ranks may just be cosmetic, they stand as a simple goal to chase. The bonus of titles playing into the theme of the universe makes them even better. Perhaps more incentives could be added, mainly cosmetically, to encourage players to reach the higher levels besides the titles. The argument could also be made that the leisurely grind to 150 is a better option than encouraging the player base to race to the max. Regardless of how it changes in the future, this is how Helldivers 2's level cap and title ranks currently work.
