Tom Hardy’s long-gestating action thriller Havoc is finally gearing up to be released on Netflix. While it’s been in the works for a while, Havoc is getting closer to becoming a reality. Although an exact release date has yet to be announced, Havoc will be arriving in Netflix’s streaming library sometime in 2023. And Hardy isn’t just starring in Havoc; he’s also attached as a producer, so he has even more investment in this project than usual.

Having played Farrier in Dunkirk, SPC Lance Twombly in Black Hawk Down, and “Mad” Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardy is no stranger to playing action heroes in gritty thrillers. With The Raid director Gareth Evans at the helm, Havoc is shaping up to be one of Hardy’s most ruthless and riveting action movies to date. Telling the story of a grizzled detective fighting his way through the criminal underbelly of his corrupt city, Havoc promises to combine brooding neo-noir tropes with breathtaking non-stop thrills, and excitement will only continue to build with every detail Netflix releases about their actioner.

Filming for Havoc was reported to have wrapped in October 2022 (via the Midgard Times) ahead of an unspecified 2023 release date. Havoc is being touted as one of the biggest films ever produced in Wales, which could lead to massive changes in the Welsh film industry. Production took place in various different parts of Wales, including Brangwyn Hall in Swansea and Barry Island Pleasure Park in South Wales. Hardy was so busy with the filming of Havoc that he had limited availability to promote the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 (although it hardly hurt the film’s box office performance).

These Iko Uwais-starring martial arts films are credited with bringing the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat into world cinema. Evans also co-created the British crime drama series Gangs of London for Sky Atlantic in the UK and AMC in the United States. Havoc is being produced under Evans’ deal with Netflix, which started with his 2018 Dan Stevens-starring horror film Apostle. The plot details confirmed for Havoc (via Deadline) suggest a crime thriller that’s just as intense and action-packed as Evans’ The Raid movies. The inciting incident is a drug deal gone wrong, after which a battle-hardened detective is forced to beat and bludgeon his way through the seedy criminal underworld to save the estranged son of a high-profile politician. Along the way, this detective uncovers a dark conspiracy of crime and corruption with a stranglehold on his city. This is par for the course for Evans, whose The Raid franchise and Gangs of London TV series have established him as a master of the cops-and-crooks genre.
