Grosse Pointe Garden Society Trailer
NBC releases the first trailer for Grosse Pointe Garden Society, previewing a familiar cast portraying four gardening friends, who hold a dark secret.
ScreenRant interviews Melissa Fumero and Ben Rappaport about Birdie's "fish out of water" arc, Brett's feelings for Alice, and when fans can expect answers about Grosse Pointe Garden Society's central mystery.
Brett And Alice Have A Deep Connection In Grosse Pointe Garden Society
"They're sort of the two on the outside looking in."
ScreenRant: Melissa, Birdie is new to the garden society, and it seems like she’s not there by choice. What can you share about how she ends up integrating into the group?
Melissa Fumero: I love the arc of Birdie actually in the garden club. There's a really fun arc we're going to tell with her clothes and her choice of outfits that she arrives in at the garden club, which starts off really bad, just very inappropriate. She's such a fish out of water there. It's nothing she would voluntarily do.
She's there to complete her community service. I think she surprises herself by actually taking an interest in the garden and learning this new skill and obviously forming this connection with the other three at a time when I think she's really craving connection at all, and all these things sort of happen for her at the garden. It's also probably the first time she's felt kind of useful and with purpose. It's a really fun arc for her—the whole garden club.
Ben, it seems like Brett may have some feelings for Alice...
Ben Rappaport: I think you picked up on something there. I think right off the bat, we get a little glimpse into that. Brett and Alice are sort of the kids from the other side of the track in of this community, this sort of affluent high society community of Grosse Pointe, and they connect over that. They're sort of the two on the outside looking in. Alice has ultimate dreams of becoming a writer in New York City.
Brett wants to own a car restoration business, so they have these intense ions that they want to pursue, but each of them have stuff in their way. But in their lives, each of them is each other's only cheerleader. And I think, right off the bat, that creates this deep connection and fills this need that they've been craving.
And also, the other thing in the way is that Alice is married, so there's that. Brett's got this baggage of his really tough situation with his ex-wife being married to the guy that she cheated on him with. So he's sharing the responsibility of raising his two kids with her. There are just a lot of complexities at play and stuff in the way.
The Timelines Will Converge In Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 1
"We can rely on each other to kind of say, 'Okay, where are we? What just happened?'"
Melissa, we learn in the pilot that Birdie gave her son up for adoption when she was a teenager. His adoptive parents don’t want them to interact, but what would you say Birdie is hoping for in of a relationship with him?
Melissa Fumero: Again, I think when we meet Birdie, she's really lost and searching for a lot and is kind of making impulsive decisions, and I think reaching out to her son is one. I think she's thought about it for a long time, but it's not the most thought-out plan or way that she does it.
And we learned she had this agreement with the parents that she would never make and she wouldn't be in his life, and she decides to ignore that. And so there are consequences to that decision. I can't say too much without giving anything away, but I will say that I love the Ford and Birdie relationship so much. I love my scenes with Felix and he's an extraordinary young actor. It's one of my favorite storylines on the show.
We don’t know who was buried or why, but is that something that the show will answer soon, or will it continue to be a long-running mystery?
Melissa Fumero: You'll find out this season.
There is a cool winter filter that helps distinguish periods of time for viewers. Was it hard to get in the right headspace when you were jumping between past, present, and future?
Ben Rappaport: Yeah, we shoot out of sequence, so on a given day, we can be back and forth in time, and it can be a little confusing. Luckily, all four of us have an incredible working relationship, and so we can rely on each other to kind of say, "Okay, where are we? What just happened?" And we also have an incredible script supervisor, Lisa, who helps keep us on track and keep all those details on track because it's just a lot to keep track of. How many times can I say track? [Laughs]
Melissa Fumero: The timelines will converge at the end of the season, also, and then it will just be present time.
