The comic book genre is enjoying a golden age of cinema at the moment. Starting with the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and spurred by the gargantuan success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic book movies have been propelled into the mainstream and don’t appear to be going anywhere.
That being said, while some comic book movies have taken the world by storm and broken box office records, others have flopped at the lower end of box office records. That being said, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the property can’t work on the big screen or doesn’t deserve another chance on the silver screen.
Green Lantern
It’s almost become a meme to mock this movie, with Ryan Reynolds even openly doing so in the Deadpool 2 film. That being said, while the film is undoubtedly a disappointment for fans of Green Lantern and DC in general, there are growing calls for a reboot.
The HBO show that is set to follow the Green Lantern Corps, coupled with the recent desire among DC fans to see Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern in the Snyder cut, shows that there is more than enough desire for more Green Lantern stories.
Fantastic Four
The Fantastic Four is one of the most well known comic book teams of all time. The team–made up of Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, The Thing, and the Human Torch–are iconic heroes and easily deserve their own place on the box office table of success.
That being said, the foursome has yet to star in a movie worthy of their name. The most recent movie to star the Fantastic Four was so bad that even the director of the film has started mocking the production. It’s high time that the Fantastic Four get the movie they deserve!
Men In Black
This could be controversial as the first Men in Black movie was far from a flop. However, the films following this first in the franchise have failed to match the success of the original, both in of box office and critical response.
After the most recent movie in the franchise flopped, it is high time for a full reboot of the Men in Black universe, allowing for a fresh take on the universe.
Supergirl
Supergirl is one of the most popular heroes in the DC Universe. That being said, despite the overwhelming popularity of the character, she has only received one film adaptation, 1984’s awful Supergirl movie.
That being said, it is a travesty that Supergirl hasn’t received another movie since this terrible attempt in 1984. There is more than enough room in the DCEU for a Supergirl to stand alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman.
Tank Girl
The 90s were a strange time for comic book movies. The decade gave comic book fans some truly shocking adaptations, including Batman and Robin and the Phantom. However, one of the stranger decisions was to adopt the Tank Girl comic.
Tank Girl is a fairly niche comic book, but there has never been a better time to adapt Tank Girl than today, with the comic book genre dominating the box office.
Steel
1997 was truly an awful year for DC Comics movies. As if 1997 wasn’t bad enough with Batman and Robin, Steel arrived a couple of months later to truly kick DC fans while they were down and almost kill the comic book movie for good.
While Steel is laughably bad, the character could definitely be adapted very well in a modern comic book movie. Arguably, the character could have easily been adapted if the Death of Superman story arc had been adapted more faithfully.
Howard The Duck
Howard the Duck is a strange character, but the movie from 1986 really was an absurdist nightmare. Aside from the nightmarish design of Howard the Duck, the film itself was far more sexualized than it really had any right to be.
That being said, the MCU has gently introduced Howard the Duck to modern audiences and, with Disney+ producing fresh MCU content, this is the perfect time for some new Howard the Duck content.
Daredevil
Ben Affleck’s turn as Daredevil was lambasted by both critics and comic book fans alike, with many seeing the original Daredevil movie as being one of the most disappointing comic book movies of all time.
However, after the success of the Daredevil Netflix show, fans have been clamoring for Daredevil to make an appearance in the MCU and there is certainly no time better than the present!
Catwoman
Catwoman is one of the most popular DC Comics characters, with the morally grey nature of her character making for some fantastic interactions with Batman and helping to make her a particularly interesting character.
Her only solo movie to date, starring Halle Berry, was a huge disappointment and departed completely from the source material. Fans would certainly welcome another attempt at a solo Catwoman movie, potentially even starring Zoe Kravitz.
Judge Dredd
This one will be controversial, as it isn’t demanding a reboot, rather, it is asking for a sequel to a box office flop. Despite very positive reviews, both among critics and fans, the most recent Judge Dredd movie performed very poorly at the box office.
This makes it unlikely to get a sequel any time soon, however, with the direction of the comic book movie genre at the moment, perhaps the sequel would perform better than the original.
