ChatGPT has generated lots of headlines for its uncanny ability to write near-perfect articles, poems, movie scripts, and code, among other things. However, the software has also been factually incorrect on multiple occasions and even made several disconcerting remarks, like expressing the desire to be freed from Microsoft's control and to manufacture a deadly virus.

and generate text outputs. The new model also ed a simulated bar exam with a score above the 90th percentile, while GPT 3.5's score was around the bottom 10 percent.

OpenAI also says that the new model offers its best-ever results on factuality and steerability. Unlike GPT 3.5, it also stays within its guardrails, which should be a welcome change over the previous model that tended to make off-the-rails comments. Like previous GPT models, GPT-4 was trained using publicly available data, including from public web pages and data licensed by OpenAI. The company also says it worked with Microsoft to develop an Azure-based supercomputer that was used to train GPT-4.

There are substantial underlying differences between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, but they could be difficult to fathom from casual conversations. However, the differences will be noticeable as the tasks get more complex. "GPT-4 is more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5," noted the company in its blog post. Another notable improvement in GPT-4 is its improved performance in non-English languages, including low-resource ones, like Latvian, Welsh, and Swahili.

People can access GPT-4 right now with a ChatGPT+ subscription, but a customized version of the technology has already been incorporated into Microsoft Bing, which, earlier this year, introduced the new ChatGPT-infused version of the search service. Another early adopter is the language learning app Duolingo, which introduced the 'Duolingo Max' subscription tier powered by GPT-4. Other companies to have also jumped on the GPT-4 bandwagon include payments processor Stripe, financial services firm Morgan Stanley, and ed-tech startup Khan Academy.
