Batman has been protecting Gotham City from crime and supervillains for decades, but now that his legacy is slowly being erased, instead of the city falling into chaos, it's becoming a "strange utopia." Without the memory of Batman, Gotham is doing better than ever before.

This strange future for Gotham City will be revealed in Detective Comics #1082 by Ram V, Dan Watters, Riccardo Federici, Stefano Raffaele, and Christopher Mitten. As Batman struggles to regain his mind in the desert, far from Gotham, the city continues to fall under the hypnotic sway of the Orgham family.

“Elegy of Sand” continues, and Batman’s hallucinatory trek across a desert between worlds becomes ever more dangerous as he finds himself face-to-face against…well, you’ll just have to wait and find out. Meanwhile, in Gotham, a strange Utopia is blooming as the Orghams continue to hypnotize the public into believing that Batman never existed. And as this knight-less city thrives, one must ask…did Gotham ever need Batman in the first place?

As the Orghams continue to erase the memory of Batman from Gotham's citizens, it appears that the erasing will create a "utopia" free of supervillains or crime. This begs the question if Batman was ever good for Gotham to begin with, and it's a question that Batman will certainly have an answer to when he eventually returns to the city to face the Orghams once more.

Batman's Battle with the Orghams Will Reveal the Truth about Gotham

One of the many criticisms that has been aimed at Batman over the years is the idea that he creates his own villains. While this is true for some villains, like the Joker and, technically, Bane, this isn't true for every Gotham villain. There are plenty of villains in Batman's rogues gallery who would've risen to power and become monsters regardless of Bruce taking up the mantle. Characters like the Penguin and Zsasz would've always become who they are. There have been many versions of Gotham without a Batman, and that's never changed the city's fate of being one of the most dangerous places on Earth. But what the Orghams are doing in Detective Comics is a lot more sinister.

The legend of Batman has helped keep crime in check and has made Gotham a safer place over the years. With Gotham's citizens forgetting Batman's legacy and the city becoming even safer, people might assume this means that Batman was never needed to begin with. This isn't necessarily the case, though, as the Orgham family is using their dark powers to hypnotize the entire city. This not only allows them to remove the legacy of Batman, but it also allows them to do pretty much anything else they want. While removing Batman's legacy certainly wouldn't remove the criminal element in Gotham, hypnotizing those criminals into behaving would.

Gotham Without Batman Seems to Thrive

Batman is made of crumbling sand.

Batman has done everything he can to save Gotham and make it a better place, and the Orghams are one of the first villains to not only banish Batman from Gotham but also to specifically attack his legacy. Batman clearly isn't going to give up without a fight and will return to Gotham to save the city from the Orghams once and for all. While some people might think that what the Orghams have done proves that Gotham never needed Batman, it actually shows the opposite. Without Batman there to fight for the people of Gotham, they've all been enslaved by a family of elites who rule over them.
