Summary

  • Vegito is stronger than Gogeta due to the method of fusion used, as the Potara fusion does not require one person to lower their power level like the Fusion Dance does.
  • Death Battle! used every appearance of the two characters across different media to settle the debate, ensuring their analysis was comprehensive and considering canon and non-canon sources.
  • While Death Battle! concludes that Vegito is stronger, Gogeta fans may still disagree and find counterarguments, such as Whis' claim that Gogeta is stronger than Beerus. Ultimately, each fan will have their own answer to who is stronger.

There is only one question that really matters in the Vegito or Gogeta? While the two characters are similar, their appearance across different types of media makes the question difficult to answer. Luckily, the creators behind the popular Death Battle! YouTube channel have made a living out of answering impossible questions like this one, and they already tackled the hottest debate in Dragon Ball's fandom.

Death Battle! is a show developed by Rooster Teeth, where fan-favorite characters (often from different franchises) are pitted against each other using a precise system of references that takes into every accomplishment to give the most accurate answer possible to the popular "who is stronger?" debates.

Super Saiyan Blue Vegito about to attack in Dragon Ball Super

In their "Gogeta Vs. Vegito" video, the team used every appearance of the two characters in all forms of media (including the Xenoverse and Heroes series) to end the debate once and for all. After a fierce battle, the winner of the fight was Vegito, proving that the Potara fusion of Goku and Vegeta is superior to the one resulting from the Fusion Dance.

Vegito Is Stronger Than Gogeta Due To A Small But Important Difference

The main difference between Vegito and Gogeta is the method used by Goku and Vegeta to fuse. Gogeta uses the Fusion Dance, a technique invented by the of the Metamoran race. Vegito, on the other hand, is created using the Potara, special earrings worn by the Supreme Kais (the gods of the Dragon Ball universe). An interesting fact is that, while Vegito appears more in canon media (the Dragon Ball Z and Super manga and anime) Gogeta was created first, by the staff working on the movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. This is what later made Akira Toriyama change the method of fusion used in the manga (where Vegito made his debut two months after Fusion Reborn came out), leading to the birth of two different versions of the same character.

Death Battle!'s decision to use every appearance of the two characters, even in secondary media, is certainly commendable as it settles any possible complaint about what is canon and what is not. It's also remarkable that they did not settle for the easy answer that Gogeta wins if it's a short fight (given in a Weekly Shonen Jump issue in 1995), based on the different time limits of the two fusions. Their decision to give the victory to Vegito comes from one small but important difference between the two fusion techniques.

Fusion Dance requires the two people performing it to have the exact same power level. Regardless of who is currently stronger between Goku and Vegeta, one of them will thus have to lower his power, even slightly, resulting in a weaker fused warrior compared to the Potara fusion, which does not have this requirement. This should explain why Elder Kai said, in Dragon Ball Z, that the Potara have a "greater effect", a claim ed by other official media too (including the Dragon Ball Daizenshu encyclopedia).

Gogeta Fans Will Not Easily Accept Vegito's Victory

This is not the only argument made by Death Battle!, and it's best to watch the full video to get a clear overview of the detailed analysis provided. However, staunch Gogeta ers will easily find counterarguments to this conclusion. For example, Whis' claim that Gogeta is even stronger than Beerus. Ever since Gogeta became canon through his appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, this debate has become hotter than ever. The people from Death Battle! did an amazing job, but ultimately, each fan will have their own answer to the ultimate Dragon Ball question: who is stronger, Vegito or Gogeta?
