Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ghosts season 4, episode 16, "St. Hetty's Day."

Nigel and Isaac will be heartbroken over Chris’s departure, I am heartbroken over Hetty’s reveal. Hetty finally discovers her power: the ability to be seen and heard by livings on St. Patrick’s Day, which allowed her to connect with Jay’s visiting cousin Sunil. Her brief but meaningful romance with Sunil casts a harsh light on her previous relationship with Trevor.

As a former Gilded Age socialite and ‘90s finance bro, Hetty and Trevor share an appreciation for luxury and status compared to the other ghosts in CBS's Ghosts. This shared outlook fueled their flirty dynamic, which blossomed into a secret romance in Ghosts season 2. Their relationship was on-again, off-again until season 3, episode 2, when Hetty tried to seduce Thor, believing it would automatically suck her off, which Trevor found disrespectful to himself and Thor. Hetty references her time with Trevor to Sunil, but dismisses it as fairly meaningless - but this could change in the future.

Hetty Confesses That Her Relationship With Trevor Was Just Physical

Hetty Calls Trevor A “Rebound” From The Washing Machine

Hetty is shocked to discover her ghost power in Ghosts season 4, episode 16 when Jay’s cousin Sunil can see and hear her. To the best of the ghosts’ knowledge, Hetty realizing she is of Irish descent and accepting the Irish as a worthy people has allowed her to be seen by the livings on St. Patrick’s Day. Sunil compliments Hetty on her “stunning gown,” mentioning it’s a shame people don’t dress up as much anymore. Sunil invites her on a walk around the grounds, as Alberta and Sas eagerly watch the budding romance.

Hetty mentions a “casual thing” she had with another ghost, but stresses that it was purely physical, unlike her connection to Sunil. Hetty doesn’t mention Trevor by name, but she describes their relationship as nothing more than a rebound from the washing machine.

Sam and Jay worry that nothing good can come of this romance, but Hetty reminds them that she never had a real love in her life, as she was sold to her husband as part of a land deal by father, so they reluctantly agree.

Sunil and Hetty bond, as Sunil is an old soul who ires how present Hetty seems. They bond over the course of the day, but when Sunil reaches for Hetty's hand, his hand es right through hers. Hetty panics and rushes through a closed door, popping her head through the door to apologize, terrifying Sunil.

Hetty doesn’t mention Trevor by name, but she describes their relationship as nothing more than a rebound from the washing machine. Hetty earnestly tells Sunil that while he might not feel like he fits in with modern dating practices, “a wonderful man never goes out of style,” promising he will find somebody worthy and alive.

Why Hetty & Trevor Were Such A Fun Couple

Hetty & Trevor Softened Each Other During Their Secret Relationship

Having died almost a century apart, Trevor’s more progressive attitudes towards sex pushed against Hetty’s strict, old-fashioned values, creating an unexpected yet entertaining pairing. They ired each other’s confidence and social savvy, and found companionship in each other they did not have during their time alive. However, Hetty wanted to keep their relationship secret, ostensibly due to their different class statuses. They share a competitive, status-driven mindset, so Ghosts pairing Trevor and Hetty together is always enjoyable.

Their clandestine relationship was fun, because of their natural witty banter and unexpected chemistry. Trevor’s shallow persona softened as he became more caring and vulnerable with Hetty, while Hetty — often cold and domineering — showed warmth and playfulness in their interactions. Their witty banter and surprisingly sweet moments brought heart to Ghosts, especially since both characters had spent much of their lives and afterlives feeling isolated.

Can Trevor & Hetty's Fling Ever Turn Into A True Romance In Ghosts?

Ghosts Has Set Up Hetty & Trevor To Have A Serious Relationship In The Future

From Hetty’s perspective, her relationship with Trevor was purely physical. She connected with Sunil in every way but physical, and this left an impact on Hetty, who was not allowed to be courted in her own lifetime. Over the course of one St. Patrick’s Day, Hetty had the most important romance of her life.

Ghosts Season 4 Said What Everyone Was Thinking About A Major TV Controversy

Ghosts season 4 episode 12 took a jab at a highly awarded "comedy" show, and the sitcom hinted at a longstanding Emmys controversy in the process.

This could open the door to a real and meaningful relationship with Trevor. Trevor always seemed more emotionally connected to Hetty than she seemed to him, as evidenced by how it ended - Trevor’s feelings could only be hurt if he wanted exclusivity with Hetty. Hetty has always been austere, cold, and distant, but maybe having a glimpse of what a real connection feels like will make Hetty desire the feeling again.

In Ghosts season 4, episode 12, Hetty finally apologizes to Trevor for the way things ended, and they decide to become “power friends” after itting they missed each other’s company. In Ghosts season 4, episode 13, Hetty and Trevor collude to each get their own bedrooms, which the ghosts worry will open the door to them resuming their physical relationship. If Hetty starts sleeping with Trevor again, I think what was purely physical will inevitably become a real relationship in Ghosts season 5 and 6.

New episodes of Ghosts air Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET and stream next-day on Paramount+. Season 4, episode 17 will air April 3, 2025.
