The finale of Ghosts season 2 concluded with a massive cliffhanger that will have a profound impact on the future episodes of the series. Coming as an American adaptation of the wildly popular U.K. series of the same name, the plot concerns a young couple who inherit an old house that is stuffed to the brim with ghosts waiting to cross over. Light on chills but heavy on laughs, Ghosts uses its clever conceit to the fullest by featuring a healthy ensemble of ing characters that never fails to surprise. Besides being hilarious, the show also has a fair amount of heart which is generally lacking in the average sitcom.

Met with rave critical reviews from the outset, Ghosts has grown over its two seasons on the air so far into a genuinely compelling sitcom that also never fails to elicit plenty of laughs. The caricature-like ghosts have blossomed into interesting, and sometimes likable characters in their own right, and with Ghost season 3 confirmed, the story will only get richer going forward. However, season 2, episode 22, "The Heir", featured a shocking cliffhanger ending that will undoubtedly change all future episodes of Ghosts.

When Will Ghosts Season 3 Arrive

As yet, no word has come regarding an official release date for the third season of Ghosts, but it isn't hard to predict when the CBS series will return to the air. Unlike streaming shows which often take years-long breaks between their seasons, network programs like Ghosts come to air on a consistent basis, and there's no reason to think season 3 won't be the same. Ghosts season 1 debuted in October 2021, and season 2 debuted around the same time a year later in September 2022. If that schedule holds, the new episodes of Ghosts can be expected to arrive in early fall 2023.

Which Ghost Is Gone - And What The Cliffhanger Ending Means

The final moments of Ghosts season 2, episode 22, "The Heir" concluded with Sam witnessing a pillar of light ascending to the sky which meant that, in the show's parlance, a spirit was being "sucked off" to the other side. The episode concluded without revealing who was taken, which leaves a juicy mystery to eventually be solved in season 3. The most obvious departee is Nigel, a ghost who has been consistently shown to be at ease with his life, but all the ghosts in Ghosts have a compelling reason to go.

Regardless of which ghost it actually was, the cliffhanger will change the show going forward, and will specifically affect the trajectory of Ghosts season 3's episodes. If it is Nigel, it will most likely put the character of Isaac at the forefront as he grapples with the fact that he still hasn't earned the right to ascend. However, if it is other larger characters like Hetty, Alberta, or Pete, it could open the door for a ing ghost to take center stage. Most importantly though, the finale of Ghosts season 2 made it clear that any ghost character could ascend at any moment as they continue to grow and improve.
