Garraka Is The Main Villain Of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Garraka Is The New Ghostbusters Big Bad

Garraka is the primary threat of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, with the ghostly figure serving as the most dangerous villain in the film. As explained by Hubert Wartzki, Garraka was a ghostly deity who was recruited by an ancient king eons ago to take part in his battles. When the king was victorious, he feared Garraka turning against him and sought to bring him down. Garraka responded in kind, killing countless people until a group of Firemasters was able to bend the element to their will and use it as a tool to contain Garraka in a brass orb.

Although Garraka doesn't physically appear in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire until late in the film, its influence is felt throughout the movie. Garraka's ability to control other ghosts makes it a particularly dangerous threat in the Ghostbusters universe. This was why the dark god wanted to kill so many people in the past, creating a spectral army that could wipe enemies. Garraka spends much of the movie manipulating ghosts like Emily Alyn Lind's character Melody, using her friendship with Phoebe Spangler as a means of tricking the young Ghostbuster into freeing him, so he can continue his war against humanity.

Garraka's Powers & The Death Chill In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Explained

Garraka's Powers Make It One Of The Most Dangerous Ghostbusters Villains Ever

Garraka uses deadly chill in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire trailer

Garraka is a particularly powerful ghost. When Ray uses the PKE Reader on the orb, the device is overloaded with spectral energy and explodes. Garakka showcases a number of impressive powers during the film, including the deadly Death Chill. Gaining power from the fear of others, the Death Chill allows Garraka to freeze people solid. Although this doesn't seem to immediately kill them, a single well-placed touch or sound will shatter the ice, slaying them instantly. The unnatural cold seems to follow the fully empowered Garraka around, as it quickly spreads and freezes New York City.

Garraka also possesses the ability to control other ghosts. Even when weakened and trapped within the Firemaster's brass prison, Garraka is able to influence other spirits and even take over the briefly ghostly Phoebe. However, this effect isn't necessarily innate, as Melody is able to turn against Garraka at a crucial junction. Garraka is also shockingly durable for a ghost. Garraka is able to brush aside proton blasts and even freeze them with ease. It takes the flames of the Firemaster and a brass-infused proton pack to finally hurt him.

What Garraka's Plan Is In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

How Garraka Wants To Take Over The World

Garraka's mission in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is to finally wipe out humanity and raise a ghostly army. On top of being imprisoned though, Garraka needs to recover its horns. These are a major source of its power and were stripped from Garraka centuries ago. Garraka's plan relies on forcing Phoebe to speak the incantation that can free itself. After that, Garraka quickly recovers his horns and sets out to kill the Firemaster before he can interfere — but mistakes (and murders) a shop owner for the Firemaster instead of finding Nadeem.

Garraka is a fairly straightforward villain in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. It bears no unique antagonism to the main cast and instead seems to be lashing out at humanity as a whole. To this end, Garraka attacks the Ghostbusters less because of the threat they pose him, and more because they're sitting on countless ghosts within the Containment Unit.. Thanks to the lingering rip in dimensions caused by the events of the original Ghostbusters as well, Garraka has a great seat of power if it can claim the Ghostbusters HQ.

Garraka Is Defeated In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

How The Ghostbusters Use Ancient Concepts To Beat Garraka

Despite earning a number of quick victories over humanity and the Ghostbusters, Garraka is caught by surprise when the Ghostbusters and their allies adapt to its specific weaknesses. Thanks to Melody, Nadeem is able to create a fiery blast that damages the spirit. Similarly, Phoebe modifies her proton pack to have brass within the mechanism. The strength of brass against ghostly creatures, empowers the proton pack and makes it capable of actually hurting Garraka. After freeing the ghosts from the Containment Unit, Garraka unwittingly sets up its own defeat.

Unleashing the ghosts left a massive vacuum in the Containment Unit, which proves capable of holding Garraka after the Ghostbusters and Nadeem contain it. This immediately undoes the effects of the Death Chill, unfreezing New York City. Garraka still remains one of the most dangerous Ghostbusters villains, however. The good ghost Melody is the only thing that keeps Garraka from killing a frozen Phoebe. Considering the other Ghostbusters were also frozen by that point, Garraka had truly come close to wiping them out and beginning its own Frozen Empire on the remnants of the Earth.

Will Garraka Return In A Future Ghostbusters Movie?

Garraka Could Become A Franchise-Wide Threat

The new team lined up in red suits on a rooftop in the Ghostbusters Frozen Empire trailer

Garraka could actually easily return for a future Ghostbusters movie. Garraka is brought down and contained within the Ghostbusters Containment Unit. Although the unit had been increasingly damaged and overcrowded throughout the film, Garraka's actions cleared plenty of room. This process also stripped Garraka of his horns again. On the bright side, this keeps Garraka from breaking loose onto the world, and could give the heroes time to find a more permanent solution to their containment problems. It doesn't negat the threat posed by the villain, though.

Garraka's powers and status as a godly figure among ghosts make it a particularly dangerous one to leave unattended. The lingering threat presented by Garraka's existence means that the ghostly deity could easily return in future installments. Garraka is notably played completely straight. In a setting where even otherworldly villains like Gozer can take a silly form like the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man, Garraka is a deadly serious threat. Although Garraka is defeated in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the entity could easily return as an overarching villain in future stories.
