original 1984 Ghostbusters film. Although the film teased a potential sequel movie with its post-credits scene, there has been no follow-up or current plan announced by Sony Pictures to continue the reboot's story.
The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot is no stranger to controversy, as it was targeted with harsh criticism and backlash after the franchise rebooted with an all-female cast. Despite the film's stellar casting, including SNL alumni Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, the actresses faced threats and plenty of sexism-fuelled hatred online. With the failure to bring in box office numbers, the studio also suffered a colossal loss from the somewhat panned Ghostbusters reboot. In 2017, original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd shared his concern for how much Feig spent on his reimagined film, wishing that the director was more inclusive about the suggestions that were presented to him.
In a recent tweet from Feig, the filmmaker called out Sony Pictures for disregarding Ghostbusters: Answer the Call in the Ghostbusters Ultimate Gift Set. The eight-disc gift set consists of the original first two Ghostbusters movies encapsulated in a Ghost Trap packaging, as well as Jason Reitman's 2021 Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and two unknown discs wrapped in cover-arts of the Neutrona Wand and Proton Pack. The collection also includes the reprint of the rare Making of Ghostbusters, which follows the creative processes behind the first film. Check out Feig’s tweet below:

Feig's tweet has led to a heated discussion on both sides. Some s are extremely bothered by the erasure of the 2016 Ghostbusters movie, while some believe that the film was never canon, since it takes place in a different universe. There have been previous animated Ghostbusters shows, but they are also missing from the gift set. Despite many arguing that the 2016 Ghostbusters movie occurs in a different universe, there have been several collaborative film collections in the past with similar matters. For instance, many reference the James Bond 24-Film Ultimate Collection, which includes the titular character played by Sean Connery to Daniel Craig.
With the polarizing arguments from both sides, many are conflicted on the arrival of the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection. As the assortment includes the Making of Ghostbusters book, it may merely be an homage to the original Ghostbuster films, while including Ghostbusters: Afterlife for the sake of continuity. Ultimately, although the Ghostbusters collection serves to present continuity, many believe that the heading of the gift set is inissible. Ignoring Ghostbusters: Answer the Call certainly seems like Sony is attempting to distance itself from the commercially unsuccessful reboot, which will no doubt be extremely disappointing to fans of what many considered to be a fun and well-executed female-led blockbuster.
