Ghost of Tsushima 2, officially known as Ghost of Yotei, has officially been revealed at the latest PlayStation State of Play with a stunning trailer. Ghost of Tsushima is one of PlayStation's biggest new franchises and sent the PS4 generation out with a bang in 2020. The samurai game was praised for its satisfying gameplay and vivid world that depicted Tsushima's beauty, but contrasted it with bloodshed and destruction. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years now and Sucker Punch is finally ready to deliver on that.

During the PlayStation State of Play, Sony finally announced Ghost of Tsushima 2 and confirmed it will release in 2025. The Ghost of Tsushima sequel is known as Ghost of Yotei and follows a new hero known as Atsu in the area of Mount Yōtei. In a PlayStation Blog post, Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Yotei will take place in 1603, over 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima so don't expect any appearance from Jin Sakai. The developer noted it aimed to embrace the idea of the Ghost as a symbol or moniker, rather than one specific character. You can view the trailer below.

Ghost of Yotei's setting will serve as a strong contrast to that of Tsushima, according to Sucker Punch. It is outside of Japan's rule and filled with new vistas for players to enjoy, including snowy tundras and grasslands. Ghost of Yotei is also Sucker Punch's first game built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5, which will let the studio create a more immersive, captivating world, expand on the gameplay mechanics of the series, and introduce new weapons to the series.

Ghost of Tsushima's heartbreaking conclusion had multiple endings, but developer Sucker Punch will likely have to choose one to be canonical.

Ghost of Tsushima has remained relevant since its 2020 release thanks to a PS5 remaster and PC port. Those versions of the game included new content such as a grand new story expansion called Iki Island which continued Jin's story and added a new area to the game's map. It whet players' appetite for the time being, but it only made players salivate at the thought of a new game built from the ground up for the PS5. Sony also greenlit a Ghost of Tsushima film, showing its commitment to the IP going forward.

With Sucker Punch embracing the Ghost of Tsushima sequel as a completely different story with new characters, it seems like this could be PlayStation's own Assassin's Creed. With the exception of some early entries with Ezio, Assassin's Creed typically features brand-new characters in every game. This allows Ubisoft the chance to go to other settings, other historical periods, and mix up the gameplay in exciting ways.

Ghost of Yotei is leaving Jin behind in favor of focusing on the idea of the "Ghost", similar to a Batman-esque character that can dull out justice/be a protector during other periods of history. It's likely that a third game will continue this new tradition and take players to another period in Japanese history with a new character and location.

Regardless of what a third game looks like, Ghost of Yotei looks promising. After not having a major first-party AAA exclusive in 2024, fans were getting worried about the state of PlayStation. By leaving fans with a promise of what's to come for 2025, PlayStation has eased some concerns. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Ghost of Yotei, and possibly some other games will all release on PS5 in 2025, meaning there should be plenty of games to play next year.
