opened the door for countless grimy sci-fi stories to rise to popularity in the decades to follow.

Now, the franchise is set to return in Science Saru's anime series, The Ghost in the Shell, scheduled to arrive in 2026. The anime's first visual teaser was released just days ago, alongside a promotional image that showcases an unmistakable retro style. While the visuals might come as a surprise to fans of Ghost in the Shell's other anime adaptations, the style is incredibly faithful to the source material, and the franchise's creator believes the series will mark the coming of a new age.

Ghost in the Shell Goes Retro In Its Anime

A large portion of the fan base knows Ghost in the Shell strictly from its many anime adaptations, and are unfamiliar with the original 1989 manga by Shirow Masamune. Based on the promotional image for the anime series, it seems Dandadan studio Science Saru are taking inspiration directly from the source, and plan on faithfully adapting the manga as no other series has done before.

However, Ghost in the Shell has never received a proper, faithful adaptation of Masamune's original manga, and Science Saru has the chance to deliver one in 2026. The creator also said, "The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point!", which suggests the series will adapt directly from the source material. Fans will be excited to see the series return, and with a style reminiscent of the time the manga was first released.

Studio Science Saru Is on a Hot Streak

Studio Science Saru is one of the current hottest names in anime. In 2023, they impressed with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and followed it up with 2024's smash hit, Dandadan, which is scheduled to return this coming July. Fans might feel that neither series quite matches the tone expected of Ghost in the Shell, but the studio has already proven it's capable of getting darker in 2018's Devilman Crybaby. Moko-chan is expected to make their directorial debut with the series after contributing to episode direction on Season One of Dandadan.

Fans can expect the studio's trademark highly stylized visuals and smooth, high-energy animation work in the The Ghost in the Shell, as well as distinctly retro '90s feel. A specified release date or details regarding the cast have yet to be revealed, but announcements are likely to come as the anime's release approaches. Until then, fans of the series can check out the first teaser here.
