There hasn't been so much anticipation for a second season in years, which is a tad ironic given that waiting and the age of time are major themes of the series. Anime Expo does make for a natural venue to reveal news, though, as it's one of the largest anime conventions in the US, and it being held in California makes it a little easier for Japanese guests to visit. As anime becomes increasingly global, events like this that are outside of Japan are increasingly important.
