A Mothman with red eyes looking at the player in Fallout 76

At some point, you will head to the Appalachia region in Steel Reign update, and there's a good chance you might encounter this enemy when going to The Purveyor or exploring the region.

Much like the urban legend, this rare creature can come in various forms and actually exist in the game. They are mostly encountered at night, and you can easily spot them with their red glowing eyes. But if you are looking for some easy locations to spot and kill Mothmans, here are some spots you can find them in.

Mothman Locations In Fallout 76

A Mothman with red eyes looking at the player in Fallout 76

Since the Mothman can only be spotted at night, you need to explore some key random encounter locations in order to find the creature. They will only appear in some locations since it depends on Fallout 76's RNG, but you should eventually encounter them. Here are some of the key locations where you can find a Mothman:

  • Several Cult of the Mothman locations like the church in Kanawha County Cemetery, Blake’s Offering, outside Lucky Hole Mine, and on top of the Moth-Home northwest of Camp Venture.
  • The guarded checkpoints of the Whitespring Resort.
  • Within the Enclave Research Facility (Scorched Mothman)

There is also a friendly Mothman that spawns at the end of the Path of Enlightenment event that occurs at the Landview Lighthouse. Once players complete the event, a “Wise Mothman” with purple eyes will appear on the ground below. By interacting with this Mothman, players gain a 5% XP boost for the next hour. Thankfully, players can get rid of this friendly Mothman without the use of things like mutations or special weapons.

There are five types of mothmen, each with a different attribute and behaviour. Here's a list of all the types of Mothmen you can encounter in Fallout 76.

Mothman Type

Stalking Mothman

Vengeful Mothman

It spawns in three different colors and will always attack players immediately.

Scorched Mothman

Has been infected by the Scorched Plague.

Wise Mothman

How To Beat a Mothman

There isn’t a set way to defeat a Mothman, but it’s always a good idea to take it on with a group. The Mothman uses powerful vocalizations to attack players with sonic blasts from a distance. These sonic blasts disorient and stagger players as well. The Mothman will also periodically teleport, generally somewhere behind the player. To beat a Mothman, it is recommended to use Ballistic or Energy Weapons and other items such as grenades/other explosives. If you need additional tips on how to beat a Mothan, check out this video by Atomic Quotient on YouTube below.

Once the Mothman is defeated, it will hit the ground and disintegrate into an ash heap. to have some backpack space in Fallout 76 available so that any loot from the Mothman can be readily stored in the inventory.
