Elden Ring Nightreign is an odd new direction for FromSoftware's Soulsborne titles, twisting the formula into a multiplayer-forward roguelite. You can play Nightreing alone, and solo expeditions might be worth it if you're up to the significant challenge, but the game is clearly designed to be played in teams of three. Like any multiplayer game, there are some unwritten rules you'll want to keep in mind if you want to be a good teammate and increase your chances of reaching and defeating the Nightlord.

Unfortunately, Nightreign doesn't have voice chat, nor does it crossplay. The playerbase is divided by platforms: PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. The lack of voice chat is a bit baffling considering it's a cooperative game, but previous FromSoftware games haven't featured it either. Matchmaking with randoms can be challenging, but once you get a couple expeditions under your belt, your general objectives should be pretty clear, and most teammates will know what to do. The tips below will help you help your team.

10 Don’t Be A Loot Vacuum

Not Every Item Will Help You

Despite the lack of communication with random allies, the most courteous thing you can do is give your teammates time to grab items. Gaining a level or two is more immediately important, but grabbing some helpful items right when the game starts can be a huge boon in the earliest stages of a run. Every piece of equipment has a ive buff, so spreading early items among the team can give you an early edge.

All loot in Nightreign is shared, except for Dormant Power, which is dropped by bosses and lets you choose one of three player-specific rewards. That means every time you open a chest or break a crate for items, they should be divvied between everyone. Generally, if an item doesn't align with your character's strengths, it's best to leave it on the ground and see if someone else wants it first.

9 Ping Where You Want To Go & Confirm Others’ Pings So They Know You Agree

Voice Chat Can't Help You With Randoms In Limveld

Don't be shy about suggesting where to go. Oftentimes, others are waiting for someone to make a suggestion too, and a ping won't draw any ire. If you want to hit up a Church of Marika for an extra flask charge, put a ping; if you want to go fight a certain boss because the map says it's got the same affinity as the Nightlords' weakness, drop a ping. The worst that can happen is someone suggests somewhere else.

Every Nightlords' weakness can be seen on the matchmaking menu, and map icons will tell you the affinity of the enemies there, which corresponds to the affinity of the rewards in that area boss's Dormant Power.

On the flip side, it can help team cohesion to confirm someone else's ping. All you have to do is look in the direction of their ping, and hold the ping button. If you aren't opposed to their suggestion, doubling their ping lets them know you're on the same page.

8 Use Gestures & Prattling Pate To Communicate

It's Better Than Nothing

Without voice chat, communicating can be pretty tough if you're not in party chat or Discord with your friends. Pings will be enough in most cases, but as a last resort, try gestures or Prattling Pate. Both can be accessed on the far right side of the screen with the equipment menu open, and many of the gestures players are familiar with from Elden Ring are there.

They may not be super useful, especially at the break-neck speed Nightreign is played at, but it can be better than no communication at all. Prattling Pate is likely to get more use than gestures, as you can give teammates a "thank you" for dropping an item for you, or give them a cordial "hello" when the game starts.

7 Ping Items That Are More Useful To Other Classes

Only Take What Helps Your Build

To go along with the loot sharing discussed above, it helps to be proactive in facilitating. If you happen to find an item that would benefit someone playing a different character, you can ping it for them. It's not immediately obvious that you can ping items, but all you have to do is hold the action/loot button and press the ping button.

The item ping will show up in the bottom right corner, and also flash on your teammates' screens. It also lets other players know that pinging items is possible, and may lead to them sharing loot more openly too.

6 Do Your Part In Boss Fights

Don't Just Watch

It may sound obvious, but you always want to make sure you're an active participant in boss fights, especially against night bosses and Nightlords. The bosses are balanced to fight against teams of three, and trading the boss's aggro between the three of you is part of the process of whittling their health down. It can be difficult for one person to constantly have the boss attacking them, so you'll want to get in there and do damage while you can.

It can be easy to end up playing Nightreign very ively, especially if you have competent teammates. It's also pretty attractive to protect yourself and stay out of harms way, but you end up putting most of the responsibility on your teammates. A lot of the bosses are relentless, and it's tremendously helpful to grab the boss's attention, so your allies get a chance to heal.

5 Let Everyone Look At A Talisman Before Picking It Up

It May Match Someone Else's Loot Better

Talismans are few and far between in Limveld – you have to find and kill the scarabs that randomly spawn around the map. Just like equipment, you typically want a talisman to go to the player whose Nightfarer is best suited to use it. It can be very annoying for a teammate to kill a scarab and pick it up before anyone else gets a chance to see what it was.

Listen for a twinkling sound while you're running around the map; that's an indication that a scarab is nearby.

Finding the right talisman can be a huge boon to a build. Many of them have carried over directly from Elden Ring, so the same synergies apply. There isn't really any reason someone playing the Recluse should keep a talisman that buffs certain melee attacks.

4 Wait For Your Teammates If They Fall Behind

Everything Is Easier As A Group

The clock is constantly ticking in Elden Ring Nightreign, but you don't have to abandon your teammates and rush to the next location – unless they're stuck in the Night's Tide, in which case you should probably save your level and Runes and run. Unless you're way over-leveled, which can happen with some lesser bosses on Day 2, everything is much easier with your full team present.

You don't want to rush ahead, unexpectedly get downed, and not give your teammates a chance to save you because you're too far away. Conversely, it's never fun to be the person left behind, constantly playing catch-up and only getting the loot scraps. Even minor setbacks can spell doom when you're trying to scale up enough to fight the night bosses, and you'll have way better chances of winning if you stick together.

3 Help Your Teammates Do Their Remembrance Quests

It's Just Common Courtesy

After beating the first boss, Gladius, Beast of Night (Tricephalos on the matchmaking menu), you'll get access to Remembrance Quests, which advance the personal story of each Nightfarer. Some of them are solo affairs, taking you to the Remembrance Realm and completing certain sequences alone. Others, however, give you objectives that have to be accomplished in Limveld.

Your Remembrance Quest will put a marker on the map showing you where to go.

Only one Remembrance Quest can be active at any given time, and only one player's Remembrance Quest can be completed during an expedition, so there are limited opportunities to complete your objectives. Some of them are a little out of the way, but you usually get rewarded for your efforts – oftentimes you'll fight a boss that drops a Dormant Power.

2 Kite Enemies Away From Downed Teammates

It's Easier To Revive Without Getting Swarmed

When a teammate is downed, there's only a limited amount of time before they die and lose a level if you're not fighting a night boss. Immediately going to their aid, however, can put you and your other teammate in a tight spot with too many mobs. It's all too easy to get downed yourself while helping teammates since your attention is divided.

Use the Duchess' Ultimate Art if teammates are down in a dire situation. It will cause all enemies to drop their aggro for a short time while you're invisible.

If one person goes down, it's best to have whoever is pulling aggro kite enemies away from the downed party member. This is especially useful in boss fights, and your Surge Sprint is usually fast enough to keep you out of reach. This can even work when you're the last one standing – kite the boss away from your teammates before running back. That way, you've got plenty of time to get them up and heal.

1 Use Elemental Items Liberally If You Have A Recluse In The Party

It Helps Her Use Magic Cocktail

Always be cognizant of someone playing the Recluse in your squad, because that Nightfarer requires special tactics. The Recluse is primarily a caster, but she's prone to burning through her FP quickly, which is tough to recharge in Nightreign without cerulean flasks. You can make yourself a tremendous help by using items that do elemental damage.

The Recluse's Magic Cocktail ability absorbs elemental stains left by those elements being used, and using Magic Cocktail replenishes her FP. Like many people, I'm prone to hoarding items, thinking there will be a perfect moment to use them, but a Recluse player can be exceptionally powerful if you're constantly using grease on your weapons or throwing pots. It may be a character-specific unspoken rule of Elden Ring Nightreign, but any Recluse main is sure to appreciate it.
