Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition kicked off the Tokyo Game Show 2020 with a new trailer, showing off fresh footage and detailing some of the changes coming to the game. Due to COVID-19, TGS is a digital-only event this year, but still has a solid lineup of games set to reveal news there, including Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Released last year, Dragon Quest XI got mostly favorable reviews for its faithful translation of classic JRPG action into a modern context. While it doesn't break any new ground, the game was praised for delivering an experience that stays true to the series' core, but with updated graphics and voice acting. Dragon Quest XI S, an updated version of the game, was released on Switch in 2019, but hasn't yet made its way to other platforms.

Now, Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition is set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 4th. As the game's TGS trailer shows, it's even making a few new additions to the game. One of the features Dragon Quest XI S introduces is new quests to explore the backgrounds of its large cast of characters. This allows players to go more in-depth into the world-building and lore of their own party. Like in its Switch incarnation, the game also presents a 2D feature, which allows players to enjoy the game through old-fashioned pixel art sprites. It also introduces a photo feature, which allows players to take pictures of the beautiful world Dragon Quest XI has to offer. The new edition also allows players to change the language to Japanese, appealing to a broader audience who might not speak English or letting international audiences play the game with its original voice cast. The game's PC version will also be available on the Epic Games Store.

The new edition also adds an optional feature to allow players to indulge in the history of the Dragon Quest series, exploring other worlds based on previous games in the series. This might be what Dragon Quest veterans were longing for, and it could provide a good introduction to the series for newcomers, especially since Dragon Quest X never came to America.

Dragon Quest XI S seems like a great option for those who are new to the Dragon Quest series. Each Dragon Quest game is a unique experience, so it is not required to play previous Dragon Quest games to understand this latest entry either. With its 2D mode, it could also end up being the ideal version of the game for players looking for a sense of nostalgia or taking on the new quests to relive previous experiences.
