Set during World War I, Kirk Douglas plays the commanding officer of French soldiers, Colonel Dax. The colonel is charged for his lack of courage to face danger in a court-martial trial because he refuses to lead his soldiers into a suicide mission.

Although critically acclaimed, Stanley Kubrick’s film was not a box office success. But because of its cultural and historical relevance, it was preserved in the United States Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1992.
