Few games can claim both the influence and staying power of the iconic, foundational FPS, DOOM wasn't necessarily the first FPS game, but alongside Wolfenstein, it shaped the genre's landscape in a way that arguably wouldn't be matched until 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved. Even modern games often struggle with long-term development , but a brand-new episode has just arrived alongside a new DOOM bundle.
Under publisher Bethesda Softworks' stewardship of id Software's catalog, a new DOOM + DOOM 2 bundle has been released, which includes an official new story episode, Legacy of Rust, according to the Bethesda website. Legacy of Rust was "created in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames."
Legacy of Rust is also "the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons." The new episode appears to be broken up into two chapters, "The Vulcan Abyss" and "Counterfeit Eden," which boast a combined total of 16 maps. DOOM + DOOM 2's Steam page has replaced those of the two games' previously most recent enhanced ports, and appears to be a free update for those who already own the titles.
DOOM + DOOM 2 Includes All Previously Released Bonus Content
Crossplatform Multiplayer s Up To 16 Players
DOOM + DOOM 2 appears to be something of a definitive collection for the classic shooters, coming packaged with the various bonus content that has been released over the last three decades. DOOM + DOOM 2 comes with the DOOM 2 Master Levels, Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest For the Living, Sigil (presumably including Sigil 2, both of which were developed by original DOOM creator John Romero), and the new Legacy of Rust. Additionally, the PC version has mod with an in-game browser, and free, featured community mods.
DOOM + DOOM 2 is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The bundle features crossplay for both PvP deathmatch and co-op. All platforms are able to run DOOM + DOOM 2 at 60 FPS in 1080p resolution, while PC and the current-gen Series X/S and PS5 can reach 120 FPS and 4K resolution. Players will also have the option of using the original midi soundtrakcs or the modern IDKFA versions, which include brand-new recordings for the DOOM 2 soundtrack.
The new Legacy of Rust episode is likely to be the biggest draw for longtime DOOM fans, and the collaboration between id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames is quite intriguing. The former's contribution to FPS canon is obvious, but the latter two have both worked on classic series in multiple capacities, developing enhanced ports, remakes, and reboots of similarly iconic series like Wolfenstein, Quake, and System Shock. Anticipation has been building for the DOOM: The Dark Ages, but DOOM + DOOM 2 appears to be an incredible and thorough collection for fans of the original games.
