Hal Jordan might not have a long life in the new Lanterns has finally been revealed. After Josh Brolin ed on the role and other movie stars reportedly did the same, Kyle Chandler was cast to play the DCU's Hal Jordan. He will co-lead the show opposite rising star Aaron Pierre as the Green Lantern John Stewart.

Before the duo was announced, James Gunn cast Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in Superman. With three human Green Lanterns confirmed for the DCU so far, the shared universe might end up making one of them stand out from the rest. While that is normally Hal Jordan's role in the comics, it seems like the DCU will catch up with Hal after that time in his life, as he is described as a "Lantern legend" in the DCU. Following a major reveal that was made after Chandler's casting, a new theory suggests Hal could die in the DCU project.

Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan Will Reportedly Not Appear In Movies

That Raises An Alarm For Fans Of The Green Lantern

Chandler is an interesting choice for Hal Jordan. The actor has plenty of experience on TV, making him a great lead for Lanterns. Also, his iconic role as Coach Taylor in Friday Night Lights serves as proof that Chandler has what it takes to live up to Hal's "Lantern legend" status in the DCU and train Aaron Pierre's John Stewart and other rookie Green Lanterns in the franchise. However, it seems like Hal will not have a major role in the shared universe, as The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit revealed on Twitter that Chandler's deal does not include movies.

Hal Jordan is the most popular Green Lantern from DC Comics. While it would make sense for DC to be wary of a new Green Lantern film after Ryan Reynolds' take on Hal tanked back in 2011, Chandler's Hal Jordan not going to the big screen after his turn in Lanterns is shocking. If the report is accurate, then this means Hal Jordan will not be part of the DCU's Justice League. More than that, the news could lead to a dark fate for the most famous Green Lantern in his first DCU project.

DCU Theory: Hal Jordan Becomes Parallax

Lanterns' Mystery Could Put Hal Jordan At Its Center

If Hal Jordan is not to appear in DCU movies, then a DC theory suggests that the most likely reason for that to happen is because Hal will die in Lanterns. So far, James Gunn has yet to confirm if the show will be a limited series or a multi-season affair. Lanterns has been greenlit for eight episodes at the moment, and those might be all that fans will get of Chandler's Hal Jordan. There is a famous story from the comics that the DCU could do a version of to explain why Hal will be missing from the movies.

The DCU's Hal Jordan is the perfect age to become Parallax, and Lanterns could have Hal and John discover the entity of fear on Earth.

In the comics, an older Hal becomes Parallax, bonding with the entity of fear and going on to decimate the Green Lantern Corps and kill several beings. The official logline for Lanterns teases Hal and John investigating a "dark, Earth-based mystery." Previously, Gunn said that Lanterns "ties into our larger story of the DCU." The DCU's Hal Jordan is the perfect age to become Parallax, and Lanterns could see Hal and John discover the entity of fear on Earth, it possessing Hal, and ending with his death after he destroys the Green Lantern Corps, changing the DCU's landscape as teased.

Hal’s Age In The DCU Could Hint At A Smaller Role

DC Went For An Interesting Take On The Green Lantern

David Corenswet's Superman will be 30, just like the actor. That is the age that was more or less expected for the biggest heroes of the DCU, as it allows actors to be around for at least the first decade of the universe. At 59, Chandler is quite older than expected for a major character like Hal Jordan. His age and Hal's description as a "Lantern legend" are enough to position the character as a veteran in this lived-in world, outside his prime. This opens the door for other Green Lanterns to take the spotlight instead.

While Hal Jordan was expected by many to be the DCU's main Green Lantern like in the comics, that role might fall to his Lanterns partner. DCU John Stewart star Aaron Pierre is 30, just like Superman's David Corenswet. After being trained by Hal in Lanterns, John Stewart could be the one to be used in the DCU's movies, becoming the Green Lantern of the Justice League and carrying on his mentor's legacy if Hal is really to die in Lanterns.
