The Freaker hordes in Days Gone's PC version comes equipped with several new bells and whistles, including an unlocked frame rate, enhanced graphics, and an overall smoother experience. To the dismay of some, though, the updated iteration of Bend Studio's zombie game didn't further build upon its best feature - hordes.
Freaker hordes are as the name suggests - an incredibly large number of zombies packed into one massive group. Deacon, and by proxy the player, doesn't face this type of challenge until later in the game once the character is better equipped. And, even then, horde encounters still prove intensely challenging. They swarm by the hundreds once awakened, following every path Deacon takes without pause. Thanks to the work of a modder, Days Gone's horde feature can reach yet another tier of difficulty.
Aigmir, a NexusMods , recently ed the Massive (Challenging) Hordes mod for Days Gone players on PC. Apparently, hordes typically boast between 25 to 500+ swarmers in total. The mod from Aigmir increases the range on average to 280 - 600 Freakers per horde. Other options within the mod allow players to experiment with "500 and 750 hordes everywhere versions," which should prove extra challenging. Tiers take the possibilities to another level; for example, the mod's Tier 5 more than doubles the size of the Mt. Bailey Horde in the Crater Lake Region. The mod seems to up the ante considerably. With that in mind, it's a shame that most players won't get to experience this more intense version of Days Gone's most marketed feature. Equally unfortunate is the realization that Bend Studio may not get to explore the possibilities on this front in a potential sequel.
Bend Studio developers recently confirmed that a brand-new IP is in the works at the Oregon-based development firm. Of course, details remain incredibly scant for the time being, though PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst teased the team's plan of building upon the open-world mechanics it produced for the 2019 sleeper hit.
Days Gone is available to play now on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS4, and PS5.
