While no roguelike game is particularly easy, Curse of the Dead Gods has its own bunch of difficult concepts and mechanics that grant the game quite a bit of challenge. Players will need to dodge and parry their enemies' attacks, face off against multiple extremely difficult bosses, and learn how to navigate the labyrinthian temple that they are faced with. No matter where the player goes there is something lurking in the shadows to cut their run short.

By far one of the most difficult concepts for players to grasp though is the different curses that the game presents them with. As the player progresses through the game they are likely to pick up a great number of these curses on their journey. They can affect things like the player's health, their enemies' skill sets, or even warp the world around them for good. This guide shows players all the game's curses and how they work.

Curse of The Dead Gods - General Curses

Curse of the Dead Gods Combat Gameplay

These curses are ones that the player can pick up at any point in time in any of the temples. These are most likely the ones that the player will be dealing with most often.

  • Auric Malediction- Anytime that the player takes damage they will lose the same amount in gold. The upside to this curse though is that health loss is reduced by 25%.
  • Blinding Greed- Gold that falls on the ground will eventually disappear after a short amount of time, but the amount of gold earned from killing enemies will increase.
  • Bloodlust- All healing effects are disabled in-game except the effects that require Blood. Whenever enemies die though they will now release Blood rather than Gold which will heal the player a little bit each time.
  • Blurred Vision- A random portion of the map will transform and only show unknown rooms.
  • Cadaverous Infestation- When the player kills normal enemies there is a chance that additional smaller creatures will spawn.
  • Creeping Gloom- Any damage taken will trigger a cloud of darkness that will in fact extinguish and flames in the room.
  • Dark Fervor- The Corruption meter will now slowly increase over time, but luckily it will not increase whenever the player enters a new room.
  • Dark Swiftness- The player will not be able to regenerate their stamina by doing a perfect dodge, but dodging does have a larger window to avoid attacks.
  • Deadly Obsession- The player's maximum stamina is now reduced by one point, but killing an enemy will now restore two stamina points at a time rather than just one.
  • Death's Judgement- Every enemy in the game now has the chance to resurrect with half of their HP recharged. On the other hand, though the player will be able to resurrect themself one time with half HP as well.
  • Divine Pact- One of the Relic slots will now no longer be able to be used, but the player will receive a random number of Divine Favors.
  • Fool's Bounty- Once a chest has been opened the player will receive a number of Corruption points. Chests will now contain more gold though.
  • Mortal Harvest- Urns will now contain Blood rather than gold, which will now heal the player. All Blood obtained though will give the player an equal number of Corruption points.
  • Shadowflame- All of the torches that the player encounters will now be lit with a dark flame, and the player will be unable to light them. This will allow the player to see things, but unable to use any of the advantages that normal fire provides.
  • Shadow Word- Regular enemies will now be hidden whenever they are in the shadows. These enemies will be revealed though when they enter the light or they attack.
  • Torch of Sorrow- The torch can now no longer light braziers and burns with a dark flame. It can still be used to reveal traps and the player will now no longer take extra damage while in the dark.
  • Trapped Chests- Chests will now be completely sealed and the only way to unlock them is to parry an attack that the chests will launch at the player. All chests now have a chance to drop an additional item though.
  • Visions of Madness- When the player takes damage they will experience hallucinations that are difficult to separate from the real world.
  • Volatile Remains- When enemies are killed they will explode after a short amount of time.
  • Sincere Offerings- Blood offerings will now no longer grant the player with corruption, but they will instead drain the player's health.

The player can only pick up these curses within the Jaguar Temple.

  • Dancing Flames- Any of the flamethrower traps in the world will now activate automatically if the player happens to stand in front of them rather than having to light them with the torch.
  • Raging Temple- All Jaguar statues that the player encounters will launch fireballs if triggered.
  • Sulfurous Barrels- The explosion radius of explosive barrels is now dramatically increased.
  • Temple's Bite- Spike traps will now be triggered automatically (meaning without the player stepping on them first) and they will continue to trigger over and over again.

Curse of The Dead Gods - Serpent Temple Curses

Curse of the Dead Gods Heal

These curses will only be able to be acquired while the player is within the Serpent Temple.

  • Death Throe Echoes- Once the player kills an enemy there is a chance that an earthquake will be triggered, which can cause damage and be disorienting.
  • Devious Darts- All of the dart launching traps that the player comes across will now be active constantly. The darts will now also deal poison damage as well.
  • Fungal Awareness- Any of the spiked mushrooms in the game will now automatically trigger their attack if the player stands near them.
  • Malicious Flora- Living Root enemies will now have increased attack speed and will be able to attack more accurately.

The player will only be able to pick up these curses within the Eagle Temple.

  • Dark Mines- Mines will now only be visible by the player if they are shrouded in darkness, and they will now also deal dark damage.
  • Biting Breath- Any of the eagle-headed traps that players come across will now breathe a strong gust of wind in front of themselves for awhile.
  • Sky Fire- Whenever an enemy is killed they have a very small chance to trigger a lightning blast directly near them after a few moments.
  • Chromatic Defense- Runic Eggs will activate automatically if the player stands near them for a short amount of time.

Curse of The Dead Gods - The Final Curse

Curse of the Dead Gods Parry

The final curse is technically a general curse that can be picked up at any time, but there is a special caveat that determines when the player gets.

Xbeltz’aloc’s Truth- Health will continue to drop until it reaches one HP. It will not decrease below one point unless the player takes damage. Keep in mind that the only way to acquire the final curse is to have four other curses already. This is the only final curse to acquire at this time, but it is extremely debilitating.
