Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the Chicago PD season 12 finale.Chicago Police Intelligence Unit, something that no other villain had managed to do. It meant Voight and his team needed to work in the shadows if they wanted to get their unit and their jobs back.
Meanwhile, Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) had to figure out what to do about their wedding. It didn’t seem right to celebrate during such a dark time, and while they initially postponed it, images from the Chicago PD season 12 finale made it clear they would tie the knot. Now eyes are on what the season 12 finale means for Chicago PD season 13, premiering in fall 2025.
How Voight Stops Reid In Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 22
Voight Turned To Old Ways To Take Down Reid
As Intelligence tried to work the situation unofficially, they kept running into roadblocks. Burgess and Ruzek decided to head to the safe house where the son of Jesus Otero was staying before his death. During the penultimate hour, Jesus was killed by Reid because he was willing to speak out about what he was doing, and now his son Renny is in trouble.
Intelligence did get a lead from the visit to the safe house, as it turned out that a cop had arrived. Thanks to another man storming the safe house, the team managed to get their hands on a weapon that had been through multiple hands, including a cop named Caldera. With some digging, it didn’t take long to find out that this cop had some civil suits against him, and he was the easiest target for Reid due to his need for money.
However, before Caldera could take a deal being offered by Voight, he crashed the car they were in, and Intelligence felt like they were at stage one again.
The man also had a similar view to Reid, and in a way, the two characters weren’t wrong. They were just trying to clean up the streets in the best way possible, seeing that the justice system was failing. Of course, they were doing it in the wrong way, and Voight couldn’t stand by that. However, before Caldera could take the deal being offered by Voight, resulting in the culprit's death.
As Voight faced a hearing with Internal Affairs the next morning, Renny suddenly jumped out and shot Reid, hitting him in the neck. Voight stayed with Reid, seemingly trying to help him. In reality, however, the whole incident was staged, with the Intelligence Unit's leader setting it up in motion.
Burgess & Ruzek Finally Get Married (Complete With A Chicago Fire Character Appearance)
The Whole Of Intelligence Celebrate The Wedding
With Reid now taken down, albeit not as anyone expected, Ruzek points out that Burgess jumped the gun too quickly on postponing the wedding. Sure, he was happy to do it if that made Burgess comfortable, but he knew that things tend to work out in their favor. They pushed forward with the wedding, and we get to see the church filled with people. Even Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) walked in, seemingly a little more at peace with the church after everything that had happened.

Burgess & Ruzek's Chicago PD Wedding Needs An Original Character To Return More Than Jay Halstead
As much as we would love to see Halstead return for Burgess and Ruzek’s wedding in the Chicago PD season 12 finale, Dawson is a bigger wish.
While many of us hoped for particular cameos from Chicago PD cast from the past, such as Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda), nobody from the past cast showed up. However, there was a cameo from another One Chicago universe series, with Mouch (Christian Stolte) going to the wedding with Trudy (Amy Morton), and that made perfect sense with the two of them married. It was a great chance to be able to celebrate the wedding, as many other Chicago PD weddings have happened off-screen, such as when Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) got married without even telling anyone in Intelligence.
Voight and ASA Chapman (Sarah Bues) sat next to each other, but it’s clear that their relationship will never be the same again after the Chicago PD season 12 finale. Chapman shares that she knows what Voight did to take Reid down, and now she’s angry. All of this proves that Voight is unwilling to change, even for her.
What Reid's Death & Voight's Actions Mean For Chicago Fire Season 13
The Love May Be Gone For ASA Chapman
By the looks of the faces of the Intelligence team, they quickly realized that their boss was somehow involved, because Reid’s death at the hands of Renny was just too perfectly timed and set up. However, they knew Voight, and they were also done with Reid calling the shots, so they were all willing to turn a blind eye. The same can’t be said for ASA Chapman.
Earlier in Chicago PD season 12, she had itted her feelings for Voight, and throughout this attempt to take down Reid, the two opened up about their pasts, including Voight sharing how he hasn't been interested in moving on from his late wife. Chapman knows the type of old-school cop Voight is, but he did promise to try to change to be a better one.
Just as Chapman looked for evidence against Reid, she could now turn her attention to Voight to end his career due to his actions.
However, that hasn’t happened, and Chapman can now see that Voight will always do what needs to be done to protect himself and his team. She figured out that Voight let Renny out of the safe house and told him about Reid murdering Jesus, knowing that he would likely gather other drug dealers to help him kill Reid in revenge.
Chapman can’t condone that, and it looks like any hint of a relationship there is now over, but there may be concerns that it affects Voight's future in Chicago PD season 13. Just as Chapman looked for evidence against Reid, she could now turn her attention to Voight to end his career due to his actions.
How Else The Chicago PD Season 12 Finale Sets Up Season 13
Intelligence Lives To Fight Another Day
While the main focus was on taking Reid down, the Chicago PD season 12 finale also needed to get Burgess and Torres back on the team. Burgess had lost her job, while Torres had also been arrested for his relationship with Gloria. In the end, since Reid was found to be a dirty cop, the two were able to get their jobs back.

I Still Love Chicago PD, But Intelligence Hasn't Been The Same Since These 5 Characters Left
I still love Chicago. PD, but after these five characters exited the long-running police procedural, the series was changed permanently.
Chicago PD season 13 allows the entire unit to get straight back to work. They will be able to work the cases brought to them, while they also deal with whatever the next threat to come after them is. The new season will also need to introduce a new Deputy Chief, who will hopefully be on Intelligence’s side rather than cause problems.
As he walked into the church in the finale, he took a deep breath, almost as if he felt like God was back on his side.
Torres appears to be in a better place after spending some time behind bars. As he walked into the church in the finale, he took a deep breath, almost as if he felt like God was back on his side. He put his faith back into God, and it’s likely that we’ll see him sleeping better and more focused on the job in the next season.
While the finale didn’t set things up for Cook (Toya Turner), the rest of the season did. She is struggling between working with the two sides of her family. The last time we saw Cook on a personal level, she got a phone call from her mom, who wanted to be able to use her daughter’s position to help her own political career. This is something that needs to be explored deeper throughout Chicago PD season 12.
