Hot off the heels of the final issue of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day miniseries and with his feature film just months away, DC revealed that Jaime is coming back in a brand-new series. Titled Blue Beetle, the comic picks up right where the miniseries leaves off and reunites the Graduation Day team of Josh Trujillo, Adrian Gutiérrez, Wil Quintana and Lucas Gattoni.
Jaime continues living his life in Palmera City. Not only is he reunited with his old friends, Paco and Brenda, but he also has new allies on his side: the Yellow and Green Beetles, Dynastes and Nitida. But as Blue Beetle balances all the new changes in his life, a threat appears in the shadows, and it could spell trouble for Palmera City and Jaime's legacy. The series' first issue will kick off an arc known as "Scarab War", and debut under the Dawn of DC banner.
Blue Beetle Graduates to an Ongoing Series
Blue Beetle: Graduation Day started life as one of sixteen pitches in DC's 2021 Round Robin tournament. And while it lost in the semifinals, DC brought the pitch back as a six-issue miniseries. The story featured Jaime graduating from high school and trying to find himself as he becomes the target of two new alien scarabs and their hosts. But Blue Beetle resolved things peacefully, not only making allies of the new Beetles, but their alien benefactors, the Horizon. It was an arduous journey, but Jaime's series ended with the young man having finally found direction in life.
The new Blue Beetle series is a serious boon to fans of the scrappy hero. Blue Beetle: Graduation Day sets up a lot of interesting ideas, but never got to explore them in-depth. From the introduction of Ted Kord's sister, Victoria, the two new Beetles, and the of the Horizon that now live in Palmera City, there's so much that's been added to Jaime's little corner of the DCU. The new ongoing provides an opportunity to flesh out the ideas Graduation Day brought while the Dawn of DC continues to spotlight fan-favorite characters.
Blue Beetle is Heading for War in New Series
The Dawn of DC initiative is casting a light on heroes other than DC's A-Listers, which is good news for Jaime. Graduation Day set up a lot of interesting plot points that deserve to be followed up on, and showed that Blue Beetle has the potential to be one of the DCU's leading characters. Between his expanded cast, the mysteries that come with the new Beetles, and Jaime heading into the future with a renewed sense of purpose, now's the perfect time to give him a brand-new series. What could be waiting for Jaime during the "Scarab War" arc? Fans will have to find out for themselves when Blue Beetle #1 releases in September.
