The new comedy remake of Father of the Bride continues the trend of weddings providing fun settings for movies. With the romance of these events, the jubilant celebrations, and all the stress of trying to pull one off right, so many movies have used weddings as a perfect backdrop for their stories.
Ranker has highlighted some of the most popular wedding movies among fans and it shows the kind of fun these events can be. From older classics to hilarious comedies to sweeping romances, these wedding movies provide endless fun.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
While most wedding movies focus on the bride and groom, the comedy The Wedding Singer decides to focus on the entertainment. Adam Sandler plays a popular wedding singer who loses his outlook on love after being left at the altar. But he soon falls for a newly engaged waitress (Drew Barrymore).
Fans of the wedding party sequences will have plenty to like in this movie with several scenes set to a catchy 80s pop soundtrack. Sandler and Barrymore make for a wonderful rom-com duo and there are plenty of laughs to be had.
27 Dresses (2008)
As magical as weddings can be, some movies have fun focusing on what a pain they can be as well, especially for those who are single. 27 Dresses stars Katherine Heigl as a woman who constantly serves as a bridesmaid only to find herself struggling when her sister becomes engaged to a man she is secretly in love with.
Though the movie follows a fairly standard rom-com formula, it is elevated by the likable cast and some funny moments. There will be plenty to like for fans looking for a sweet story filled with laughs
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
The one thing fans love more than a wedding is a royal wedding. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement continues the fish-out-of-water story of Mia (Anne Hathaway) as she adjusts to her new life as a princess. But she soon realizes that she will have to get married if she is to be queen.
The movie is a delightful sequel to the comedy hit and continues to be a perfect vehicle for Hathaway and her charms. Chris Pine also appears in the sequel as her top suitor.
Bridesmaids (2011)
While most wedding movies tend to be rom-coms aimed at female audiences, Bridesmaids decided to let the women get in on the gross-out comedy fun while also telling a genuinely entertaining story.
Kristen Wiig stars as a woman at a crossroads in her life who feels the pressure building as she is named maid-of-honor for her best friend's wedding. Wiig makes for a hilarious and grounded lead while she is backed up by an outstanding ing cast, including Melissa McCarthy in a scene-stealing role.
The Princess Bride (1987)
Not only does unexpected fantasy take on the wedding movie, but the wedding itself is not a happy occasion. The story follows a young woman named Buttercup who is chosen to marry a powerful prince only for her long-lost love to return.
The movie is filled with wonderful, lovable, and exciting characters that help to bring this unique take on a fairy tale adventure to life. While the wedding might not be as big of a focus as some of these other movies, The Princess Bride is nonetheless a pleasant cinematic experience.
Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
Many wedding movies have characters dealing with complications leading up to the big day. In the case of Sweet Home Alabama, that complication is a previous marriage. Reese Witherspoon stars as a woman living a fabulous life in the big city when she gets engaged to her boyfriend. But before marrying him, she has to return home to get a divorce from her estranged husband.
The premise clearly sets the stage for a fun and sweet love triangle story as well as the story of going back home after a long time. Witherspoon is a lovable rom-com lead and really elevates the movie.
The Proposal (2009)
In order to enjoy the romance and comedy of some of these wedding movies, fans will have to put up with some fairly silly premises. In The Proposal, Sandra Bullock plays a pushy boss who forces her employee (Ryan Reynolds) into a fake marriage to avoid getting deported.
Though the setup certainly doesn't sound romantic, the two leads bring a lot of humor and charm to the story. There is also a hilarious ing role from the late, great Betty White.
Father Of The Bride (1950)
Andy Garcia is only the latest actor to take on the story of Father of the Bride as the original take goes back to 1950. Spencer Tracy stars in the comedy as a man dealing with the endless complications that arise when his daughter is getting married.
The movie has a lot of fun with all the anxiety that can go into planning such a happy event. However, along with the comedy, the movie also focuses on the feeling of a father having to see his daughter grow up and move on.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
One of My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a little independent movie that captured the attention of many fans. The movie stars Nia Vardalos as a Greek woman who falls for a non-Greek man and then struggles to bring him into her family as they prepare to get married.
From the cultural richness to the romance to the colorful characters, My Big Fat Greek Wedding charmed audiences and became one of the biggest indie surprises of the 21st century.
Father Of The Bride (1991)
The first remake of Father of the Bride is the version many fans feel is the best. Steve Martin takes on the titular role of the family patriarch who is dealing with the endless stress and complications that go along with putting together his daughter's wedding.
While Martin is a comedic legend, he also does very well with the more emotional aspects of the story. He is also backed up by a terrific cast, including his comedy partner Martin Short in a scene-stealing role as the eccentric wedding planner.
