The video game market has never been as expansive as it is now, with such a variety of options out there: sport, and action-adventure, to name but a few. However, for as long as video games have existed developers and programmers have taken inspiration from film spawning a large sub-category of video games, those that are based on or inspired by movies. I’m sure you can think of a few that would make your top 10 list of video games as with every new video games console ever released, there have been one or two influential and popular movie-based games that have captured our imagination. Movie-inspired video games are thoroughly enjoyed as they allow the player to further experience their favorite movie by controlling the main protagonist.
Today we have compiled a list of the top 10 video games based on movies, we are going to include video games from different eras which span multiple different consoles. With that in mind, all the games included on our list can still be purchased. It wouldn’t feel right to talk about some amazing games and whet your appetite without having the chance to go out there and play them! So let’s take a look at the top 10 video games based on movies.
Activision’s GoldenEye 007 is a 2007 video game that is based on the GoldenEye movie originally released in 1995 and the subsequent video game originally released on the Nintendo 64 two years later in 1997. The Nintendo 64 version was critically acclaimed upon its release, and it went into video game folklore, which still has a cult following today. Activision had a lot on their hands with critical eyes when they announced they were creating a remake for the Nintendo Wii, and overall, they have done an authentic job.
The game itself plays as a first-person shooter video game, think Call of Duty or Halo, and it flows rather smoothly with the Nintendo Wii’s controls. The controls in the game are intuitive and there are some exciting, if not slightly challenging, puzzles that are controlled by the Nintendo Wii. Although the developer had plenty of material to base their characters on, they are still very fleshed out and defined and managed to recreate an immersive game, which isn’t always the case with movie-based video games. Voice actors like Judy Dench as M and Daniel Craig as James Bond make for an authentic storyline dripping in James Bond folklore. Since this game was originally released in 2007, there are not a lot of online players to battle against, so don’t go into this expecting online matchmaking. However, the storyline and missions are enthralling enough to keep you entertained all the way through.
- Re-imagined game based on the film and 1997 video game
- First-person shooter not unlike Call of Duty
- Voice actors including Judy Dench as M and Daniel Craig
- A classic that is still available to purchase
- Publisher: Activision
- Genre: First-person shooter
- Mode: Single-player, multiplayer
- Platform: Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox
- Rating: T
- If you are a fan of first-person shooters, then this will be up your street
- There are new missions included, a nice difference between the N64 version
- Well defined characters, which isn't always the case with movie video game recreations
- Because of its age, online-multiplayer is obsolete
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a spin-off from the 2018 video game, Marvel’s Spider-Man. This time around the main protagonist is Miles Morales, a Spider-Man in training who has gained his arachnid capabilities in a fashion that is almost identical to his teacher, Peter Parker. Like Parker before him, Morales gets bitten by a genetically enhanced spider which gives him super abilities to swing around the city and kick bad guys' butts. This game follows on from its predecessor and Miles Morales has been relocated to his new home in Harlem, where he is expected to take care of the city in Peter Parker’s absence who has left to help his partner Mary Jane with her reporting duties abroad. In an atmosphere of permanent danger, Morales struggles to balance his civilian life where his mother is running for a position in the city council while a war is spreading between the Underground and the Roxxon Energy Corporation.
What is presented is an open-world game, which is situated in the snowy streets of Manhattan. The mechanics are very smooth and swinging about the city is a breeze. Although, the auto-swing is quite strong when you are in the air, perhaps a little more control would make it a lot more enjoyable. This is a really enjoyable game, that any Marvel fan is likely to love. It is a little on the short side, it will only take around 15 hours worth of gameplay to complete, short and sweet. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is only available on the PC and Playstation, so Xbox s are going to miss out this time around.

If you are into violent games that are spent mostly behind the wheel, then this is the game for you. The Mad Max video game is based on the Mad Max franchise, and it puts you straight into the post-apocalyptic open world that people have grown obsessed with. Although the video game has a different storyline compared with the movie, there are a lot of returning characters.
During the game, you play as the infamous Mad Max, and it is your objective to upgrade the Magnum Opus, his badass vehicle, to a standard where it can take on the nefarious gang of raiders who are led by Scabrous Scrotus. Like the movies, Max’s aim is to reach the ‘Plains of Silence’, to find peace, and to be done with the hordes of raiders that have scoured the planet.
The main focus of this game is the vehicles, as mentioned your ultimate aim is to upgrade the Magnum Opus as well as you can, but you can also collect other vehicles that are found in the game. There are about 50 different vehicles in total you can collect, keeping things exciting and allowing for a different objective as opposed to the storyline. The open world is fun to roam, and it looks fantastic, or as fantastic as an apocalyptic world can look. 4. Batman Arkham Collection
When compiling this list we could have easily picked any individual Batman Arkham game to be included, but after realizing you can now buy the Batman Arkham collection in one it was a no-brainer. The Batman Arkham Collection includes three different games, Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and the series final Arkham Knight. If you are buying the physical format of the game, be aware that Arkham Knight comes in the form of a able code that you will have to redeem from your console's online store, and it has been reported this code is not applicable in some regions across the US. However, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City both come in disc form and there have been no reported problems with those.
Developed by Rocksteady Studios, the Arkham Collection features an original storyline that is separate from the movies. Written by Paul Dini, who is a well-known face in the Batman universe, the first game Arkham Asylum sees Batman take on his arch nemesis and old foe, the Joker, as he threatens Gotham City with an explosion. The sequel, Arkham City, is set 18 months after Arkham Asylum, and sees Bruce Wayne behind bars within a new super-prison complex. Whilst incarcerated, Batman needs to uncover mysterious schemes whilst trying to find a cure for the infection that has affected both the Joker and himself. The largest game of all three and the last in this trilogy is Arkham Knight, which sees antagonist Scarecrow as the main instigator against Batman and the rest of Gotham City. All 3 games are going to give you hours of investigating, fighting, and rescuing Gotham City from its ever impending doom, so if you’re a Batman fan or even have a fascination with the macabre, these are the games for you.

The two work together as they set out to avenge the death of their families at the hands of Sauron’s henchman.
Traveling across Middle Earth, the main mission is following the quest for revenge, but there are numerous side missions you can enter that keep the game exciting, such as looking for artifacts with Gollum or freeing human prisoners who have been taken captive by the Uruk Hai. Gameplay feels realistic as it adopts the Nemesis Engine which means artificial intelligence re your previous interactions with them and will react accordingly, so if you’ve annoyed any boisterous orcs they will your face and attack if you are close by.
Shadow of Mordor was released across multiple different platforms including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via Steam). The game is the biggest in the Lord of the Rings universe, and it was met with a very positive reception, winning Game of the Year in 2015 and receiving plenty of praise from fans across the globe. The only critique we can think of is the lack of character development, Tailon's backstory could have done with a bit more attention.

9. Ghostbusters: Sprit Unleashed
Ghostbusters has seen somewhat of a resurgence in the last few years. This was ushered in by the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, released in 2021 featuring new faces to the franchise played by actors like Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. Without wanting to miss a sticky dose of nostalgia we also see the return of Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd in Afterlife. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed follows on from the events in Afterlife and is an asymmetrical first-person shooter that requires a team of 4 to complete ‘jobs’ which involve getting rid of pesky ghosts.
Instead of following a clearly defined storyline, Spirits Unleashed focuses on 4v1 matches that will allow you to either play as a Ghostbuster or the ghost. It is up to you if you want to play offline and if you do your other 4 teammates will be AI, if you play online your teammates will be Ghostbusters from around the world. As mentioned, if you play as a Ghostbuster then it is your job to trap the ghost whilst if you play as the ghost you have to create as much havoc as possible haunting locations and evading capture. You can create your own avatar at the beginning of the game, selecting different appearances and voices which is a fun feature. If you are a fan of games like Dead by Daylight or the Friday the 13th games then you are more likely to enjoy Ghostbusters: Afterlife as they are quite similar in feel.
There is a limited amount of maps, only five in total, so you’re probably not going to sink hours upon hours playing this game, but it is really accessible to many different skill levels, and we can easily see this becoming a family favorite. Especially if you love Ghostbusters.

10. Blair Witch
The Blair Witch video game is a little different from the other entries on our list, a lot less dramatic, subtle and mature. It is a survival horror game that has been inspired by the groundbreaking movie, which was initially released in 1999. Lauded as one of the most influential found-footage-based movies, The Blair Witch Project inspired countless other psychological thrillers since its release. If you are a fan of the film, then this is a great opportunity to be the main protagonist. The Blair Witch video game is a spin-off, with a brand-new storyline set two years after the events in the film. As you can anticipate, it is a survival horror game that is played from a first-person perspective, the aim of the game being stealth. You are aided by your trusty companion, Bullet, and go off into the forest looking for a missing boy. Along the way, you will encounter many creepy things including wooden dolls and psychiatric notes, two things you definitely don’t want to come across in a forest. The game mechanics are really simple, there are no crazy button combinations needed, and the game relies on its storyline and atmosphere to bring the ‘fun’. This is a great option if you are looking for something a little different, although the length of the game is a little short we would have preferred it to be a few hours longer at least, but that is a testament to the enjoyment it brings.

The plethora of movie-based games out there is a bit of a minefield. You may have a favorite movie that has a video game release, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to enjoy the game. There are a few video games based on movies that totally missed the mark, Bad Boys: Miami Takedown and Catwoman are two that stick in our minds. Also, just because you enjoyed the movie it doesn’t mean you want to play out the exact same story as you watched on film. An interesting new story that is based on the film is always the better way to go if you are going to create a game that will keep fans happy and entertained. With that in mind, if you stick to the games on our list, you’re bound to select a game that you will enjoy. Even if you have never seen the movies, this top 10 is good enough to be video games in their own right, and the movies they are based on don’t do all the heavy lifting.
We have decided to include games that can be found across multiple different platforms to have the largest selection possible. Every game on our list can be played on Playstation, Xbox, and PC at a minimum. We have also selected some older games that have been culturally significant and are still enjoyable to play. Regardless of the age of some of the video games on our list, like GoldenEye 007, you can still purchase all of them. So if any have taken your fancy, give them a try.
