Black Clover is an exciting shōnen series with plenty to offer both on its surface and just a bit beneath it. It's a series starring Asta, a magic-less boy in a world where magic is valued above everything. While he's severely disadvantaged because of his inability to use magic, Asta overcomes obstacles better than any other character in the show and most other characters in anime. He's a strong-willed, kindhearted kid who turns into a wrecking ball of fun and destruction as the series progresses.
Black Clover does a great job of portraying genuinely heartfelt themes throughout the series. Asta's individual story has a lot of them in itself, showing a powerless boy turn into a magnanimous young man through hard work, determination, grit, and the help of those around him. With these powerful traits, it's easy to see why Black Clover can have such great messaging throughout the entire series.
6 Don't Judge People Before Understanding Them
Characters in Black Clover Have More Depth Than Most
Most characters in Black Clover are more than they appear to be on the surface. Characters like Noelle, Nozel, and even Grey first appear in the show hiding their true selves before revealing who they really are in moments of battle. Noelle first starts the series as a prideful, naive young girl who looks down on the rest of the Black Bulls and Asta especially. While it can be quick to write her off as a rude, selfish character, she's much more than she appears to be on the surface.

10 Funniest Black Clover Moments
With many amusing and quirky characters, Black Clover is one of the most entertainingly funny shonen, and these are its most hilarious moments so far.
After some introspection and some help from her fellow Bulls, it's revealed that Noelle actually had a brutal childhood. She's unable to control her magic without the use of a wand, which is looked down upon in the world of Black Clover, especially because Noelle comes from a family of nobles. Her siblings, Solid and Nebra Silva, bullied her relentlessly, and her eldest and most powerful brother, Nozel, said gruesome things to her, blaming his youngest sister for their mother's death.
Once everyone got to see what Noelle had to endure as a child, it became much easier to understand and even empathize with her character. The rest of the Black Bulls worked even harder to protect her, allowing her to relax and become the girl she really was. Black Clover, but it's only one of many that tells the tale of someone being much more than they appear to be. If the Black Bulls had cast her aside, she wouldn't have had the opportunity to grow and become a protective and caring character.
5 Everyone Deserves a Chance at Forgiveness
Forgiveness Is a Key Component of Black Clover
Forgiveness is a popular trope in a lot of mainstream shōnen series. Naruto Uzumaki is famous for using his 'Talk-no-Jutsu', where he can talk a villain down from their metaphorical mountain of villainy and help them become the thoughtful person they once were. This worked especially well with Nagato when Naruto convinced him of the error of his ways, allowing Nagato to see from Naruto's perspective, sacrifice himself, and revive all the Hidden Leaf Villagers he had just killed.

Black Clover: How Asta Sets Himself Apart From Shonen Heroes With an Old Trope
Asta is a fascinating byproduct of a classic shonen archetype, wielding the Stock Shonen Rival trope like nobody's business in Black Clover.
Following in his footsteps, there aren't many characters better at redeeming villains than Asta. He's exceptional at finding the inherent humanity in those who fight alongside him, just as well as he can find the good in those he fights against. Characters like Mars, Patry, and even the Witch Queen are swayed by Asta's sheer determination and hopeful outlook. When Asta first met Mars, Mars was one of anime's deadliest one-man armies, fighting the Clover Kingdom's magic knights with fierce power and an unbreakable spirit.
Asta saw potential in his opponent, and over time, got Mars to redeem himself. Not only did he not have to kill someone, but Asta also gained a powerful ally at the same time. It's a great way of showing the power of forgiveness for both the person being saved and the person saving them at the same time.
4 Sur Your Limits
Sometimes, You Have To Do More Than You Thought Possible
Yami Sukehiro is the king of getting stronger when it looks like there are no other options. It's another hugely popular trope found in all good shōnen anime series, like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and many more. When it seems like all is lost to Goku, he'll go Super Saiyan and prove even the villainous galactic emperor Frieza wrong. When Naruto's sensei is slain by the almighty Pain, he heads to Mount Myoboku to learn Sage Jutsu. When Yami and Asta's backs are against the wall vs. Dante, they throw caution to the wind and unlock new abilities in the heat of battle.
There are plenty of moments in Black Clover when it looks like all is lost. The Eye of the Midnight Sun invades the Black Bulls' battles against denizens under the sea, trapping Yami in an unbreakable prison. His Bulls fight their hardest against an overwhelming opponent and nearly lose their lives doing so. Instead of quitting or running away, however, each of them sures their own limits in the middle of a fight to pull off moves even they didn't think they could do.
Yami is incredibly inspired by his own squad and decides to do the same - sur his limits. He creates a brand-new move called the 'Dark Cloak Dimension Slash' that allows him to slash through entire dimensions with just his Katana, Dark Magic, and his unreal willpower. He breaks out of the prison, heads to battle, and takes down Vetto in a single stroke of his sword. It's this kind of determination mixed with grit that makes Black Clover such a great watch from start to finish.
3 Don't Give Up On Yourself
You Can Always Achieve Your Goals
All the themes found throughout Black Clover are top-tier, including one of the most prevailing themes found throughout the show - a person should never give up on themselves. Like a person suring their limits, a person not giving up on themselves starts and ends with them. While other characters in Black Clover are there to each other, each character as an individual works hard to make sure they always have their own back, no matter how bleak a situation might seem.
The Black Bulls are the best example of this philosophy, as their leader, Yami, would never allow them to falter in battle. Asta is a shining star as well, as there have been many times in his life where it seemed like the entire world was conspiring against him in an attempt to shake his will and break his spirit. After the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony, Asta is being bullied for being magic-less by a magic . The bully uses his overwhelming power to put Asta into a corner he can't physically escape.

Top 10 Strongest Magic Types in Black Clover, Ranked
Yami's Dark Magic and Dante's Gravity Magic are two of the strongest in all of Black Clover, but who's magic takes the number one spot in the series?
While the bully ridicules Asta, making fun of his inability to compete in such a dangerous world, Asta could have given up on himself. He could have resigned himself to his bully's insults and quit before he ever truly started. Instead of listening to his naysayer, however, Asta reaches within himself to find an inner strength the bully could never compare to. He eventually pulls out the Demon Slayer Sword, negates the magic attacking him, and knocks his bully out quickly. It's a great example of why never giving up on yourself is one of the best mindsets anyone can have in life.
2 Hard Work Beats Talent Every Time
Asta Is One of the Hardest Working Characters in Anime
There are plenty of talented characters in Black Clover. The Silvas, the Vermillions, and the Kiras make up the noble houses in the series. Each character from the houses has access to a huge pool of mana and even more physical resources to allow them to exist in a different league than everyone else without having to move a finger. Characters like Asta, however, prove that it's not the talent you're given that makes you who you are, but what you do with it.
Asta quickly becomes one of the strongest characters in Black Clover, but it's important to that he started as the weakest. He was a peasent without magic. He has no noble lineage to draw from, no riches to use, and no real experience in battle. Instead, he had a sheer determination that saw him train day in and day out. His raw will makes him who he is, more than any given talent ever could. By showing Asta as the hardworking, immovable character that he is, Black Clover does a great job of reminding everyone that hard work beats talent every time.
1 Rely On Others For The Things You Can't Do Alone
You Can't Do Everything by Yourself
Black Clover is a humbling series in that no matter how powerful a character might be, they're only a fraction of themselves without their allies around them. Each character in the series is only made better by their allies, proving that it's always good to rely on others for the things you can't do yourself. Vanessa's Red Thread of Fate ability is a perfect example of this. There have been a few occasions when of the Black Bulls would have met certain death, but with Vanessa around, they're able to live and fight another day.
Luck is one of the strongest, fastest, and most ready-to-battle characters in the series. He's always the first to jump into a fight, and with Rouge on his side, he can fight at his strongest without worrying about what comes next. It's a great reminder that allies can bring the best out of each other, no matter the situation or the opponent. Every time characters in Black Clover face unbeatable odds, they can rely on one another to get the job done.
