Warning: major spoilers ahead for Avengers Mech Strike #3!
The Voltron team-up. In Avengers Mech Strike, Kang has been too much for Marvel's heroes to handle, meaning a new tactic may be in order. It could be time for the Avengers to consider taking a strategy from Voltron himself—by uniting forces.
Avengers Mech Strike is a new miniseries from Marvel Comics that gives each Avenger their own mech. The heroes are taking on Kang the Conqueror and his biomechanoids—giant monsters that have become more dangerous as the series progresses. However, there is still a strategy that hasn't been used by Avengers' mechs in comics so far that could prove helpful in the fight. This strategy would come straight from Voltron, a giant robot made up of five smaller robot lions, which recently starred in a Netflix remake of the original animated series from 1984.
The third issue of Avengers Mech Strike by Jed Mackay, Carlos Magno, Guru Efx, and Vc Cory Petit proves that the Avengers are in over their heads. They are up against a lot and this fight is not looking like one that they are close to winning. Independently the Avengers have not been able to make any headway with their opponent and their suits are taking damage faster than they can be repaired. Soon may be the time for the Avengers to truly assemble—the same way that Voltron does.
The Avengers have faced Kang singlehandedly, which resulted in Black Panther dying. They have split up into duos to face multiple threats that have appeared at the same time. It was also revealed that the suits take damage faster than they can be repaired, resulting in slower response times. How much longer can they have before they don't have reliable suits at all">Avengers Mech Strike #3 revealed that Thanos has been recruited as an ally in the fight against Kang and in the next issue he will have his own mech. Yet, singlehandedly, it doesn't seem possible for the Avengers to succeed.
The mech suits in this series, unlike in the Marvel Comics series Mega Morphs from 2005, have only one form. Mega Morphs featured Avengers in mech suits that were able to transform into other vehicles, like the Transformers do. Thus far, Avengers Mech Strike has chosen not to follow this route, leaving the mechs in a default form with additional weapons added such as Thor's hammer and Black Widow's spear. Given the type of story this is, however, there doesn't seem to be much more that can be done to juice up these mechs. This is particularly true since it is a miniseries with only a couple issues left. It is very likely that this series will instead take a Voltron twist. If a single mech isn't enough, several mechs together should be much stronger and so, the Avengers should assemble.
In Avengers Mech Strike #3, Captain America says that the Avengers will "pull together" because they "always do." What better—or more satisfying—way is there to pull together than by combining forces and making eight Marvel mechs into one massive one? If this is a function that Tony Stark has not ed for within his designs, then he isn't as much of a genius as he would appear, since it is an obvious option to have available. By the end of this series, the Avengers should definitely assemble into a super mech, teaming-up like Voltron.
