Coming soon to current and next-gen consoles, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the newest entry in the long-running Ubisoft franchise. Combining Viking lore with Dark Ages England, the game follows the warrior Eivor on a quest to conquer Britain. Prior to the game's release, a podcast called Echoes of Valhalla is an in-depth look at the history and mythology that inspired Assassin Creed Valhalla's story.
Comedians, historians, and others attempt to cover as much history regarding Vikings as possible across the podcast's handful of currently available episodes. As Eivor and the clan move toward Europe, their adventures will take them across the sea and into England during the brutal Dark Ages. Ultimately, tensions between Eivor and Alfred the Great will barrel players toward the game's conclusion.
It's certainly a lot of ground to cover, and Echoes of Valhalla offers quite a bit of interesting tidbits concerning the people of the North. The first episode concerns the Vikings and explores their values and beliefs, and why conquest and wealth were so important to them. All of this is great background information to have before the game releases, and it also helps explain the motivations behind the Vikings' aspirations of epic conquest. The follow-up episodes explore other aspects of history, and how they will affect Assassin's Creed's story.
History And Myth In Assassin's Creed Valhalla
The second episode of the podcast concerns Viking ships, which will play an important role in Assassin Creed Valhalla's story. These vessels allowed Vikings to sail far and wide, all of which is integral to Valhalla's story of conquest. The third episode deals with pillaging, raiding, and Viking mythology. These mythological settings, like Asgard, were recently shown in the Deep Dive trailer Assassin's Creed Valhalla. This also means Eivor will be able to obtain legendary Viking and British weapons, including Excalibur.
Episode four of Echoes of Valhalla deals with the Vikings trying to settle the British Isles, while episode five deals with Alfred the Great's retaliation. All of this sets up interesting plot points, including the battles fought between the Vikings and the British troops. It also helps showcase Assassin Creed Valhalla's settlement system, which allows players to erect and upgrade buildings, as well as pillaging other settlements for goods.
Along with the Deep Dive trailer, these podcast episodes of Echoes of Valhalla are great for getting Assassin's Creed fans excited for the new game. It's also interesting to see how history and mythology figure into aspects of the story and gameplay. Assassin's Creed Valhalla releases November 10th, 2020, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One - as well as next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
