WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Beau Is Afraid, Hereditary, & Midsommar!

Beau Is Afraid. The film follows the socially undeveloped and chronically paranoid Beau on an unusual odyssey to return home for his overbearing mother's funeral.

While Beau Is Afraid might be a step away from the immersive horrific atmospheres of Hereditary and Midsommar, the film achieves a pervasive sense of anxiety that is impossible to escape during its three-hour runtime. Beau Is Afraid focuses more on the internal fears of the protagonist instead of the external horrors that the main characters must face, creating a very innovative type of horror film that deviates common genre tropes and conventional narrative structures. Beau Is Afraid lacks disturbing images and graphic jump scares in comparison to Hereditary and Midsommar, but all three Aster films offer some incredibly shocking moments that are difficult to forget or turn away from.

10 Beau Is Afraid: Attic Penis Monster

Joaquin Phoenix looking injured and sad in Beau is Afraid

The strangest scene in Beau Is Afraid has to be in his mother's attic when Beau encounters an enormous penis monster. Jeeves tracks him and bursts through the window, stabbing the monstrous testicles before the penis monster kills Jeeves by stabbing him in the head. The monster is meant to be Beau's father, or at least represent him somehow. Beau is terrified by the thing, as he is most things throughout the outrageous movie, quickly grappling on the floor away from it before his mother lets him come back down from the attic. It's difficult to say which Aster attic scene is most disturbing.

The smile is unjustifiable and shows a break from reality in Dani, whose being celebrated and showered in love by the cultists. He looks up to see the horrific image of the possessed Annie levitating at the top of the house, stabbing herself in the neck.

Dani and the others watching in horror in Midsommar

In Midsommar, things get weird when an old woman jumps off a cliff and smashes her face into a rock below after staring at Dani from above. Dani and her American friends react in sheer horror, while the cultists expect it as part of one of their nonsensical rituals. An old man follows her to the edge and jumps, despite the pleas from Dani's friends. The man shatters his leg to the point of barely hanging off his body. Another cultist uses a giant gavel to smash the old man's head, killing him instantly. More cultists clobber the man's head in, although he is obviously dead.

1 Hereditary: Charlie Is Decapitated

Charlie turns around looking scary in Hereditary

The most shocking Ari Aster moment belongs to Charlie's decapitation scene in Hereditary. Peter is speeding on a dark road driving to a hospital with Charlie suffocating in the back seat, grabbing her throat and kicking her legs. Charlie rolls the window down and leans her head out, gasping for air, which offers some relief. Suddenly, a dead animal in the road forces Peter to swerve to his right, accidentally causing Charlie's head to connect with a telephone pole. Charlie is in shock and continues driving home without seeing the damage done. Ari Aster's most shocking cinematic moment is a gruesome shot of Charlie's head covered in ants on a freeway.
