Domestic Girlfriend is a truly baffling show with twists and turns that not even the most experienced anime fans will be able to predict. The premise of a student becoming the stepbrother of his older crush and one-night-lover can only lead to one of the most confusing and dramatic relationships in anime. Yet, despite how exaggerated the series can be, many fans enjoy how unpredictable it can be.

8 Rent-A-Girlfriend

After his former girlfriend broke up with him, Kazuya became so depressed that the only answer he could find was to hire a girl to pretend to be his partner for a day. One disastrous first fake-date and a confrontation for a low score on the app later, the boy and his chosen girl, Chizuru, agree to meet again to help him make his grandma believe he is in a happy relationship.

This seemingly small decision would drastically change their lives, as several parties try to find out the truth behind their relationship. For many, Rent-A-Girlfriend’s biggest issue is its protagonist, who tends to be hard to like and relate to. Surprisingly, this is what makes the series entertaining, as viewers see him struggle to balance his failed romantic life. Nevertheless, the series does have some redeeming qualities, like an amazing antagonist.

7 Rosario + Vampire

While humans live their lives as if nothing happened, monsters and creatures of darkness are taught how to blend into their world in the prestigious Yokai Academy. Everything was running smoothly, until a human boy named Aono became enrolled, putting monster society and the protagonist’s life at extreme risk. His only hope is his kind classmate, Moka, a vampire who wants to help protect his secret.

Considered by fans as one of the worst manga adaptations, Rosario + Vampire is a show that ignored the dark and creepy atmosphere of the original to create a romantic comedy. The series has been heavily criticized for its excessive use of fanservice and its simplistic humor. Still, it can be enjoyable for fans who are not looking for more than a classic Shōnen to the time.

6 Ghost Stories (English Dub)

Due to her mother’s tragic ing, Satsuki and her family are forced to move back to their hometown, trying to rebuild their lives after the loss. Once there, the girl makes several new friends, with whom she plans a night exploration through the abandoned school nearby. Her need for adventure leads her to discover that the town has been haunted for decades, and it was her mother’s job to keep the spirits sealed away.

It is now Satsuki and her friends’ job to keep the ghosts at bay, before they harm someone. While the original series is eerie and unsettling, the English dub of Ghost Stories could not be further apart. The voice actors took the liberties to make this series an awkward but beloved comedy. The story told in the dub does not make sense, and it can be somewhat offensive at times, but it is without a doubt one of the funniest dubs fans will find.

5 Platinum End

Overtaken by his depression after the death of his parents, Mirai decides to end his life to escape the suffering. Before he can, he is rescued by a woman named Nasse, who reveals herself as his guardian angel. She also explains that Mirai has been selected as one of thirteen candidates who will compete to become God, as the current deity is about to retire. Without any choice left, the hero enters a life-or-death competition, with the intent of not harming his opponents.

Created by the same talented artists behind Death Note, one of the best anime of all time, Platinum End is an uncomfortable and convoluted superhero story. Among the many criticisms fans have raised about the show, its unrealistic characters, slow pace, and underwhelming fights are among the most critiqued. However, the series does possess a certain charm that its peers lack, as it tries to resolve complex moral dilemmas that leave its viewers pondering about life.

4 Ex-Arm

For most of his friends, Akira was an eccentric and odd genius who could repair any piece of technology he came across, despite being deathly afraid of them. Tired of being seen as strange, the boy decides to change his life, only to die without warning. Almost two decades later, a futuristic cop duo awakens Ex-Arm, the most advanced and dangerous weapon, only to find out that Akira’s mind has become the robot’s AI system.

Even though the premise of Ex-Arm is quite interesting, the manga series will always be considered superior to the anime by fans. The studio behind the series tried to utilize CG to attract fans with novel visuals. The result was hilariously bad animation, with emotionless characters and fight scenes that feel stiff and slow. Fans love to see the show just to make fun of how disastrous the final product ended up being.

3 Inferno Cop

Once a regular police officer with a happy life, the titular Inferno Cop becomes a ruthless anti-hero after a secret organization known as the Southern Cross killed his family. Armed with demonic powers, a flaming car, and a gun that blows up anything it shoots, the protagonist will chase and destroy any criminal he comes across in his quest for revenge.

Undoubtedly one of the most bizarre anime ever created, Inferno Cop is a violent, shocking, and strangely entertaining show. Despite its low animation and purposefully bad plot, the show has managed to gain new fans throughout the years. It is a series so odd, that one cannot help but feel compelled to continue watching.

2 Cross Ange

The discovery of a miraculous technology known as Mana helped humanity advance drastically, achieving equality and peace for all. Or so they say, as those who are unable to use the technology due to their genes are seen as lesser and are derogatorily called Norma. The protagonist, Ange, used to be a princess, until her jealous brother revealed her as a Norma, causing her to be exiled and become an unwilling soldier in a war against mysterious beings known as DRAGONs.

Ange Cross is a show with a deep social commentary about inequality and amazing Mecha designs. Lamentably, all its good qualities are overshadowed by its excessive fan-service, poor animation, and unbearable characters. Fans might want to see if they can stomach these unpleasant traits, as the show does have qualities that could have belonged to one of the best mecha anime.

1 King’s Game

When a text message is received by everyone in Nobuaki’s classroom telling them they are now a part of the King’s Game, no one takes it seriously. They believe it must be a prank by one of their classmates and decide to play along, as the challenges are easy and entertaining. Yet, when the instructions become more questionable, the students try to quit, only to find out that losing the game is punishable by death.

With no other option but to keep playing, the protagonist will try to find a way to escape the game alive. King's Game is a series that could have been a classic of death games anime but woefully failed. Its characters, plot twists, and challenges are hard to enjoy, as they are beyond unrealistic. Still, the series can be enjoyable for fans who simply want to see some brutal deaths and are willing to suspend their disbelief.
