As audiences reflect on Jurassic Park series, and the genre will only continue to evolve regardless.
Sony has been developing this new sci-fi project in which Adam Driver fights dinosaurs since 2020. 65 follows a pilot named Mills, and its 2022 trailer sets up a story of survival set in the Mesozoic era. 65’s trailer has already established high hopes from dinosaur enthusiasts everywhere, showcasing haunting visuals, intriguing mysteries, and horrifying fauna in a new prehistoric adventure. 65 might deliver on the thrilling dinosaur journey that the Jurassic World trilogy teased.
65's Dinosaurs Already Look Scarier Than Jurassic World's
Jurassic World's human characters rarely feel at a disadvantage because the films’ settings are in the modern day and feature animals they’ve created, so there is a sense of familiarity. Although Jurassic World introduces new monsters like the Indoraptor, the series also feels more like an enjoyably over-the-top B-movie than a horror story. Between the concepts of trained velociraptors, mind-controlled dinosaurs, and giant locusts, Jurassic World’s tone is a problem, often campier than it is scary.
One of the words Adam Driver uses in the 65 trailer is “alien,” and the movie’s trailer highlights that idea effectively. It presents a hostile prehistoric world occupied by dinosaurs who can't be trained, captured, or easily outsmarted. In 65, it’s clear that this is the dinosaurs' world and no place is safe. Additionally, unlike dinosaurs like Blue, who seem even more cartoonish as the Jurassic World trilogy progresses, 65’s dinosaurs are more frightening in their briefly glimpsed scenes. With the film coming from the creators of A Quiet Place, it shouldn’t be surprising that 65’s creatures come off as prehistoric nightmare fuel as a first impression.
65's Dinosaur Story Is More Inventive Than The Jurassic World Movies
65’s trailer has several new storytelling opportunities that the Jurassic World franchise can't explore, and this heavier sci-fi setting could give audiences a different kind of dinosaur tale. Although Jurassic World’s settings are awe-inspiring and iconic, 65’s shows fascinating potential. Already the idea of being set 65 million years ago creates intriguing questions. Since humans won't be around for around 63 million years, it prompts audience curiosity around where Adam Driver’s character comes from, regardless of whether he’s an extraterrestrial or a time traveler.
Additionally, being stuck 65 million years ago presents unique challenges to finding a way back home. Mills’ struggle against the forces of time, space, and nature in 65 makes for an engaging trailer, especially with the limited sci-fi technology at his disposal. With Jurassic World Dominion’s critical response among the lowest in the series, it feels right that audiences embark on a new dinosaur adventure. Promising “an epic fight to survive,” 65 is the kind of franchise successor Jurassic World needs. While Jurassic World established a legacy, it’s time 65 makes history and creates its own.
