Spencer Dutton makes a choice in 1923's cast, and the Dutton heir can't catch a break on his journey back to America. After arriving in America in Galveston, he was forced into a situation for the Mafia where he had to transport bootlegged alcohol to Fort Worth, Texas. The mission went awry multiple times, and episode 4 saw him picked up by a cop to answer for his involvement.

Spencer narrowly escapes the law by ending up on a train heading east, taking him further from his Montana destination. The most immediate problem, however, is the threat of three dangerous hobos he finds in the same train car as him. Aside from being a member of the Dutton family, Spencer is a highly-trained soldier and hunter, but traveling across America without any money is still an overwhelming task.

Why Spencer Left The Train Instead Of Dumping The Hobos' Bodies In 1923 Season 2, Episode 4

Spencer Didn't Want To Leave A Trail Of Bodies With Police In Pursuit

The hobos on Spencer's train make threats almost immediately when he arrives, telling him that he'd have to pay the "tax" if he wants to remain in their car. Spencer doesn't have any food or money to trade, and there's no guarantee that he can trust them to stay away anyway. The only option is for him to defend himself, so he pulls out his gun and prepares to do so. The hobos know that he'll have to fall asleep, which he eventually does. 1923 season 2, episode 4, ends with Spencer fighting them off, nearly losing his life.

He doesn't want murder charges, and now he won't be linked to them.

Spencer manages to shoot the two male hobos and throws the girl against the train wall. However, instead of throwing the bodies off the train, he gets off himself. This puts him in a challenging situation, as the officer from episode 4 is likely to continue pursuing him, and he's now left along the railroad without any method of transportation. Spencer's choice is curious, but he may have been thinking that the three bodies would incriminate him further if the police discovered them in pursuit of him. He doesn't want murder charges, and now he won't be linked to them.

Jack leans over to drive a wagon in 1923 season 2

1923 season 2 is already halfway completed, and this has been confirmed as the Western show's final season. Spencer will reach the Dutton ranch before the Yellowstone spinoff ends, but it might not be in the next episode. Taylor Sheridan is saving the Dutton's conflict with Banner Creighton and Donald Whitfield for an exciting finish to 1923, but episode 4 hinted that they're going to begin preparing their army. Spencer will likely arrive soon to turn the tide, hopefully in episode 6.
