Jeff Bridges' career has aged with him well. Bridges' career began while he was still a baby, playing Infant at Train Station in the 1951 movie The Company She Keeps. He continued on in acting in his young adult life, playing roles like Duane Jackson in The Last Picture Show and Lightfoot in the Clint Eastwood-led Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, both of which earned him Oscar nominations. In the 80s, Bridges played one of his most iconic roles as the lead in Starman, which also earned him an Academy Award nomination.

As he aged with his roles, playing several iconic middle-aged man roles. This includes his comedy role as the Dude in The Big Lebowski, as well as his leading part in Crazy Heart, which earned him his first and only Oscar win. He has now transitioned into playing parts that match his septuagenarian energy, including a role in Hell or High Water. One of those parts took the form of an Emmy-nominated and appropriately titled television show, which has now gotten some disappointing news.

Per Deadline, The Old Man has now been cancelled. FX has chosen not to renew The Old Man for season 3. While FX did not provide detailed commentary as to the reasons for nixing the program, Deadline mentioned that the show's season 2 ratings were not as high as season 1.

While The Old Man received decent reviews, getting an 80% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, its cancellation is not entirely surprising. Even over its seven-episode first season, the show struggled to maintain its audience. Some did not like the direction in which they took the series past the first few episodes, a downfall that was reflected in the episodes' IMDb ratings. The Old Man never quite recovered from this diminishing reception, which is likely what led to the series' ultimate downfall, despite a strong performance from an aging Bridges.
