A new Scream, Wes Craven's original classic, and Scream 2, a not-as-good but still pretty fun sequel.

Alas, the new Scream coming in 2022 will be the first entry into the storied franchise without legendary horror director Wes Craven at the helm, who ed away in 2015 at the age of 76. For quite a while, the Scream franchise stars - such as Neve Campbell - expressed hesitancy toward the possibility of doing another Scream without Craven.

Thankfully for fans, they eventually changed their mind, with the Scream "holy trinity" of Campbell, Ready or Not, have in store for the Scream faithful. However, many were left confused by the decision to just title the new movie Scream. Is it a sequel or a reboot? The answer to that is, to an extent at least, both.

Scream 5 Movie Title Treatment

Scream 2022 (aka Scream 5) isn't a reboot in the most literal sense, as it doesn't erase the prior films, and is technically a follow-up to the Woodsboro story that followed Sidney, Dewey, and Gale through four movies. However, star Cox has said that the intent is to use the 2022 movie as a launching pad for a new iteration of the franchise, seemingly in the way a Halloween 2018 managed to do. Speaking of the latter, that points to a possible reason why the title is simply Scream.

While Halloween 2018 presented itself as a belated Halloween Ends double shot was greenlit. Those behind Scream 2022 definitely want to experience a similar success story, with sequels to the new movie coming later. The biggest question though is whether or not any of the returning cast will make it out of Scream 5 alive, or leave carrying further sequels to the newly introduced stars.
