After being a huge part of the first two live-action Transformers movies, many fans were left wondering why Megan Fox left the Transformers franchise before Transformers: Dark of the Moon. LaBeouf was later cast as Sam Witwicky, the nerdy kid who gets unwittingly drawn into an intergalactic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. While it takes place in the same continuity as Bay’s Transformers movies, this one is very much its own (pardon the pun) beast.

Dark of the Moon had a difficult task ahead of it when it was initially produced, having to bring fans back to the franchise after the poor reaction to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. While the second film was a box-office success, it received negative reviews from fans and critics alike, with many considering it a step-down from 2007's Transformers.

Sam Witwicky's near-death experience was the catalyst that helped Mikaela finally express her feelings for him. When Sam was revived and declared his love, the characters were on track for a happy start to the third installment.

Although the last two Transformers movies were rather financially successful, Steven Spielberg was still wise to advise that Michael Bay stop after three. While promoting his film, Ambulance, director Michael Bay has had time to reflect on the state of the Transformers franchise and his role within it. Spielberg’s advice proved to be sound based on the franchise's quality issues, and it would seem that Bay has his regrets about not listening.
